Do Hatchbacks Need To Be Worried About Compact SUVs, MPVs and Other UVs?

A recent report indicates that slowly, UV segment in India is increasing. The sales of compact SUVs, MPVs and mid-size SUVs amongst other UVs are better.

If noticed, in the past couple of months, there have been many UVs launched. UVs or Utility Vehicles include SUVs, compact SUVs, mid-size SUVs and MPVs amongst the most. All these four categories have seen some new launches.

Cars like Hyundai Venue, MG Hector, Kia Seltos, Tata Harrier, Maruti Ertiga and much more were recently launched in India. These cars have made huge headlines owing to their immense popularity and high sales figures.

Venue competes with the likes of Vitara Brezza, both battling for the best-selling SUV position. Debutants like MG Motors and Kia Motors have seen success with their first launches and the bookings for their cars are record-breaking.

The report says that buyers in the urban environment are preferring UVs over hatchbacks because they now seem more practical, safer and feature-loaded. In comparison, the hatchbacks are getting slightly costlier. The very instance is that you can either by a top-end variant of smaller Maruti Swift or you either go for the mid-spec variant of a much bigger Maruti Vitara Brezza.

The sales of hatchbacks are still better in rural areas and tier-II cities. Seeing these new launches, there are tons of features infused in these cars which are actually not found in many entry-level BMWs or Mercs. Like, the Seltos comes with Heads-up display, Venue with wireless charging and air purifier and Hector with a panoramic sunroof.

That’s why most of the automakers are also focusing on bringing new SUVs and MPVs in India. Kia Motors has confirmed that it will only focus on SUVs for the time being. Hyundai, MG Motors, Maruti, Tata, Ford and many other brands are planning new utility vehicles.

Currently, the share of UVs in the passenger vehicle sales stand at around 31%, which is likely to increase up to 40% by 2020. This is one of the primary reasons that has compelled manufacturers to focus on the terms “SUV” and “MPV”. Maruti S-Presso, Renault Kwid, Renault Triber, Mahindra KUV100 are some examples of small cars inspired by the much bigger SUVs or MPVs.
