The Hyundai Santro has scored just two star safety rating in both adult and child occupancy from the Global NCAP and the car’s body structure and footwell were also rated unstable.
Global NCAP has conducted a round of crash tests for India made cars and the Hyundai Santro was also part of the mix. The Santro is a very important car for India as the nameplate is more than 20 years old and it replaced the Hyundai Eon in the Indian market. Unfotunately though, the Hyundai Santro has scored only a two-star safety rating at the Global NCAP crash tests.
As is the norm with Global NCAP, the crash was conducted on a base-spec Santro that comes equipped with a driver’s side airbag, ABS with EBD and driver seatbelt reminder. The car was crashed at 64 kph in a frontal offset test. The Hyundai Santro received a two-star safety rating for both adult and child occupation. The Santro’s body structure and footwell area were also rated unstable.
The tests revealed that the head and neck protection for adult occupants was good, but chest protection was weak for the driver and marginal for the front passenger. In terms of child occupant protection, the Santro’s rear seat does not offer ISOFIX child seat mounts. Also, the protection provided by the seatbelt-based child restraint system (child seat) was poor. It also lacks a three-point seatbelt for the middle occupant. All of this quite impacted the score for the Santro. Further, the front facing older child’s seat idi even worse than the rear facing infant seat.

David Ward, CEO and President of Global NCAP said, “The latest results in our #SaferCarsforIndia crash tests show a mixed safety performance, and disappointingly, there are no five star performers. The Indian government’s crash test standards are clearly helping to eliminate any new zero star cars from the market, and we will continue to work with them to ensure the push of regulatory requirements is complimented by the pull of consumer awareness, encouraging the demand for ever higher levels of safety.”

The Hyundai Santro is however compliant with India’s latest crash test standards. This latest round of crash test was conducted under Global NCAP’s #SaferCarsForIndia campaign that was introduced back in 2014 and since then, they have crash tested more than 30 Indian cars. The Maruti Suzuki WagonR, the Datsun Redigo and the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga were also participants of this round of crash tests.
