In fresh reports, Maruti is likely to put a new 1.6 Litre BS-6 compliant diesel engine on the S-Cross and XL6, which only come in petrol as of now.
On its way to comply with the BS-6 norms, Maruti has decided to discontinue its upcoming diesel engines. While they have hinted they might later introduce diesel engines on the big cars like Ciaz, S-Cross, Ertiga and such, the smaller cars would only come with petrol engines.
Fresh reports from Gaadiwaadi states that Maruti’s costlier cars like XL6 and S-Cross might actually get diesel engines in 2020. The new diesel unit will be a 1.6 Litre DDiS engine, borrowed from Fiat and updated with BS-6 norms.
Some of you might remember, the S-Cross was originally launched with the same engine. It was a torquey engine which produced 120 BHP and 320 Nm of torque. However, it increased the prices of the S-Cross, which was later just left with the smaller 1.3 Litre DDiS engine.

However, Maruti XL6 and S-Cross with new diesel engines would not debut before the end of 2020. As of now, the XL6 comes only with the new 1.5 Litre SHVS petrol engine, but the S-Cross still relies on the old 1.3 Litre DDiS oil burner. The same engine used to power every diesel car in Maruti’s lineup.
As we all know, Maruti is considering bringing the new Vitara to India next year. It will be mid-size SUV, positioned to rival the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The new diesel engine is likely to come on the new Vitara as well because it will be the costliest car from Maruti.
We are not sure if Ciaz, Ertiga and Vitara Brezza will get diesel engines in future. Although, the Ciaz has been updated with a 1.5 Litre diesel engine, which is also speculated to come later after the emission norms.

Maruti has already launched Alto 800, WagonR 1.2 Litre, Swift, Dzire, Baleno and Ertiga with BS-6 compliant engines. The newly launched S-Presso and XL6 were launched with compliant engines, right from the start.
