This is our first look at the new Audi RS 3, which we expect will go on sale in late 2020, shortly after the release of the upcoming, standard-issue fourth-generation Audi A3. It will be the fastest version of the German brand’s range-topping hot hatchback to date, producing upwards of 400bhp and offering fresh competition for the Mercedes-AMG A 45.
Like the forthcoming Mk8 Golf, the new Audi RS 3 will be based on a revised version of the Volkswagen Group’s MQB underpinnings, albeit with a range of performance upgrades. This RS 3 mule features a lowered suspension system, a set of drilled disc brakes and larger calipers – all of which will likely find their way on to the production model.

As the new RS 3 will feature the same platform as the outgoing model, Audi is also expected to retain the current car’s turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder petrol engine. However, its power and torque figures will increase to around 415bhp and 500Nm, (over the current car’s 395bhp and 480Nm figures), in a bid to keep the RS 3 competitive with the AMG A 45.
Power will be sent through a dual-clutch automatic transmission to Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system. Like the outgoing model, the new RS 3’s chassis and drivetrain will feature a suite of technology, including adjustable dampers, a torque vectoring system and an adaptive electronic power steering setup.

Like all RS-branded Audis, this new RS 3 will feature an aggressive styling package, with a lower front splitter, wider side skirts and a set of flared wheel arches. At the rear, there’s the firm’s trademark oval exhaust tips, a new tailgate spoiler and a larger bumper fitted with a diffuser.
The cabin will also receive Audi’s traditional “RS” makeover, with a pair of heavily bolstered sports seats, a sports steering wheel, aluminium pedals and a range of RS-specific displays for the car’s 10.1-inch infotainment system and digital instrument binnacle.
