New Genesis GV60 spied at the Nurburgring

Hyundai’s luxury spin-off brand looks set to return to Europe with a compact SUV to rival the BMW X3 and Audi Q5

Our spy photographers have snapped the new Genesis GV60 on camera, undergoing handling assessments at the Nurburgring. This mule could mark the return of Hyundai’s luxury spin-off brand to Europe, where it will wade into the heavily populated midsize premium SUV market, currently dominated by the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLC.

Hyundai, Kia and Genesis have a history of platform sharing, so it’s reasonable to suggest the GV60 will pull from its parent companies’ parts bins. Hyundai and Kia already have an X3-sized platform underpinning the current Santa Fe and forthcoming Sorento, which would give the Genesis GV60 access to a wide range of technologies and engines.

Opinion: “Genesis is set to succeed where Infiniti has failed”

The Santa Fe is currently only offered in the UK with a turbocharged 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, although its platform is capable of supporting engines from other Hyundai and Kia models. While a diesel is likely, the range-topping GV60 could use the 365bhp 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine from the Kia Stinger GT S, which would give the new SUV comparable performance to the BMW X3 M40i.

Given its position at the top of the Hyundai pecking order, the new Genesis GV60 will feature all of the technology available on the Santa Fe, as well as a range of additional upmarket interior trim. Expect a digital instrument binnacle, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment screen, a premium stereo system and a host of driver assistance technologies.
