Volkswagen will be putting a stop to the Ameo sub-4-metre sedan by early 2020. The sedan made its debut in 2016 and was the first to offer cruise control in its segment.
As we know, Volkswagen is discontinuing diesel cars from next year all over the world, after the Dieselgate scandal. In India, the Polo and Vento will come only with petrol engines post the BS-6 norms in April 2020.
Back in February 2019, there were reports suggest that Volkswagen Ameo might be completely discontinued in India in 2020. The developments are now hinting that the Ameo is most likely to miss out the BS-6 engines, thus seeing an end in the first quarter of 2020.
Back when it was launched in 2016, it was a cute looking small sedan from the German giant. It was the first car under the 10 Lakh range to offer cruise control, a feature that came on some premium cars.

However, since its birth, the Ameo failed to create a buzz in India. The sedan was specifically made for the Indian market, where Volkswagen could gain on the popularity of sub-4 metre cars and could also reap the benefit of lower taxes. The segment included the Hyundai Xcent, second-generation Maruti Dzire and the Ford Figo Aspire.
Data from various sources suggest that Ameo just had a 2% market share in the sub-4 metre sedan segment. While Dzire was the best-selling in the lot, Ameo was the least selling model. The sales were never a trend-setter right from the start.
The Ameo comes with a 1.0 litre petrol engine and a 1.5 Litre diesel engine. The petrol engine produces 75 BHP and 95 Nm of peak torque, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 1.5 Litre TDI produces 110 BHP and 250 Nm of peak torque, mated to a 5-speed MT and 7-speed DSG.

Highlights of the Ameo include electronic power steering, Opening and closing of windows with key remote, height-adjustable driver seat, electric ORVMs, Cruise Control, Auto AC, Rear AC vents, Auto Rain Sensing Wipers, touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Cooled Glove Box.
Safety features include ABS with EBD, dual-front airbags, rear parking sensors and the speed-alert system as standard fitment. The top-end Highline Plus variant comes with Rear Parking Camera, Auto-Dimming Rear-View Mirror, Cornering Lights, ESP and Hill Hold Control (DSG).
The 1.5 Litre TDI diesel engine has a lot of fans amongst the auto enthusiasts. So, if you are planning to go for the Ameo, now is the right time. As is the case with Polo, even Ameo is a driver-enthusiast car.
