The next-gen Mahindra Thar has been completely redesigned and it sits on a new platform and gets brand new styling, new interiors and a new engine with 140bhp as well.
Mahindra Thar has always been a favourite among offroaders and despite its short comings, it has done very good numbers on the sales chart. The current-gen Thar lacked refinement, features and good on-road manners. But what it had in plenty was a very honest character. And now come to 2020 Auto Expo, Mahindra will be unveiling the all-new Thar and it has been completely redesigned from grounds up.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar sits on a brand new chassis and gets new set of engines as well. The new engines develop much more power than before. But what really has changed are the interiors of the new Thar which now get much more features and a more premium interior than before. It also gets all necessary safety features, the lack of which was the reason that the present Thar was discontinued. Let’s take a closer look at this upcoming icon from Mahindra.
New Exterior Design
The upcoming SUV will take inspiration from the Jeep Wrangler and gets the seven slat grille upfront. It will also come with factory fitted hardtop and will be bigger in dimensions. It will carry the rugged muscular design and now gets fresh front and rear bumpers. There will be newly designed 17-inch wheels and wheel arches have also been so designed that customers can easily fit after market wheels, something that is very popular with the Thar. The Thar is also expected to get LED lighting for the first time in its lifetime.
Revamped Interiors
Overall, the 2020 Mahindra Thar will be the butch looking old school SUV but now it will pack some modern features on the inside. A large touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be expected. Similarly, a new dashboard design and a multi-function steering wheel are also expected with the new model
The SUV will also get front-facing seats at the rear and bucket seats can be made available. Also, the upcoming SUV will come in different wheelbase options so the interior space will also be widened.

New Chassis
It will use the third generation Mahindra’s body on frame chassis which not only provides rigidity to the car but also a better off-road experience hence reducing off-roaders wheel articulation by 10%. This chassis is used by Scorpio and TUV300 and with this, the Thar will see an increase in its dimensions. The SUV will get an independent rear suspension and revised front suspension.

Upgraded Engine
The new Thar will use BS6 compliant 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine which will be more fuel-efficient and better in refinement than the on-going model. It is expected to churn out 140 bhp and a peak torque of 300 Nm – an increase from the current 105 bhp and 248 Nm of torque. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual gearbox and availability of an automatic gearbox could be kept as an option.
Better Safety
With the safety norms kicking in, all trims of the upcoming Mahindra Thar will get basic safety measures. Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, front seat belt reminders, high-speed alert system, the speed-sensing door lock will come as standard. Also, the Thar will also get a new front end that will be compliant with the pedestrian safety norms. That said, the upcoming Mahindra Thar will be much safer than its on-going model.
