Audi Cars Might Not Come With Diesel Engines Post BS-6 Norms

Audi India has confirmed that diesel cars are not in future plans for India and they will rather focus on petrol, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrids after BS-6 norms.

Upcoming BS-6 emission norms have taken a toll on another premium automaker, Audi. In India, the manufacturer has decided to discontinue diesel cars and further, Audi will only focus on petrol, petrol-hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars.

Recently, Audi launched the A6 facelift which was left out with a diesel engine and got a mild-hybrid petrol engine. A similar situation will come with other cars as well, as the company believes that now people also opt for petrol cars.

While it says that the option of a diesel engine on big cars like Q7 has not been ruled out completely. Audi wants to check if the demand for their cars still exists once there are only petrol engines. For instance, if demand for Q7 diesel increases, Audi might start considering it.

Seeing the buying patterns over the years, the buyer share for petrol cars has increased over the years. While the majority premium car buyers still prefer diesel engines, a small and increasing share is also opting for petrol.

Moreover, more cars with mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrids are being planned for India. Most likely these hybrid type cars will be bought in India and then sold in the market. Audi plans to utilize the government’s policy of importing 2500 cars annually without homologation.

The upcoming models for Audi include the new Q3, Q5 Facelift, new A7 and next-generation A8. We can expect all of these models to be launched in India without any diesel engines.
