No, hatchbacks aren’t a dying breed and there are quite a few new hatchbacks headed our way in 2020. So here’s a list of hatchbacks you should look forward to.

The Indian automobile market maybe obsessed with SUVs but the humble hatchbacks haven’t been forgotten yet. Hatchbacks still constitute a mainstay of the Indian automobile market, particularly because of their access point in terms of their pricing. Maruti Suzuki continues to be a market dominator just with their expansive range of hatchbacks. Come 2020, we are going to see fresh new hatchbacks make way to our market and here’s a list of some of them you should be watching out for.

Hyundai i20

The i20 has been one of the most successful hatchbacks of Hyundai in India and in 2020, the i20 is going to see a full model change. As we have already seen from the spy shots, the new i20 features much sharper styling and Hyundai’s new cascading grille and LED lights all around. The new i20’s headlamps merge with the grille, giving it a look similar to that of the recently launched Elantra facelift. The new i20 will also boast of a lot more features on the inside which includes the BlueLink connected technology seen in the Venue and even a sunroof. Under the hood, it will be powered by BS-6 compliant 1.5L diesel and 1.2L petrol engines. Hyundai will also include the 1.0-litre turbo GDI petrol engine on the i20 that made its debut on the Venue in India.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio

The current-gen Celerio has been in the market since 2014 and it has been bringing steady number for Maruti. Now, Maruti Suzuki has been planning for a new Celerio which has been codenamed the Y1B. Like all new Marutis, including the S-Presso, the new Celerio will also sit on the lighter yet stiffer Heartect platform. Maruti will offer the new Celerio with the 1.0-litre, BS6-compliant petrol engine and a CNG option. The car is expected to launch in the second half of 2020 and is expected to be priced from Rs. 4.2 lakhs.

Maruti Suzuki will also be giving a mid-life facelift to the Ignis in 2020. The facelifted model will receive major styling revisions, particularly to the face of the car and refreshed interiors as well. It will also get the BS6-compliant, 1.2-litre petrol engine, mated to either a 5-speed manual or an AMT. On the features front, the updated Ignis will receive the new SmartPlay Studio infotainment system which will make it more competitive in its class. This too is expected to launch in the second half of 2020 and is expected to be priced from Rs. 4.8 lakhs.

Tata Tiago Facelift

We have already seen spy shots of the new Tata Tiago being tested on several occasions. The new Tiago is set to receive some major styling tweaks and will feature an angular nose, similar to the Altroz. It will also get much more features than the current model and will also comply with crash-test and pedestrian safety norms. Tata has however decided to drop all their diesel engines and so the new Tiago will only come with a 1.2-litre petrol mated to either a 5-speed manual or an AMT. Expected launch in early 2020 with prices starting from Rs. 4.3 lakhs.

Tata Altroz

While all other cars in this list are new-generation of existing cars, this is a brand new car altogether and Tata’s first attempt at the premium hatchback segment. The Tata Altroz is expected to come with three engine options – the 85hp, 1.2-litre, naturally aspirated, three-cylinder motor from the Tiago; a 102hp, 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol that’s shared with the Nexon and Tiago JTP; and a 90hp version of the Nexon’s 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-diesel motor. Tata had plans of launching the Altroz by the end of this year itself but now it has been pushed to early next year when it will be launched with BS6 compliant engines. It is expected to have a starting price from Rs. 5.3 lakhs.
