New Honda City Makes Its Debut; India Launch Expected In 2020

The new-generation 2020 Honda City now gets a new engine, is bigger and new features. It will be launched in India by mid-2020.

Honda has finally unveiled the new generation City sedan in Thailand. The sedan was last updated in 2017 and now, it gets a refreshed styling, a new turbo-petrol engine along with some additions in the features list.

Starting with the design, the new Honda City can be seen with a tweaked front bumper, fresh LED projector headlamps and front grille. With the new 15-inch alloys, the City now looks inspired by the latest-generation Accord.

At the back, the boot is now sharper and the bumpers have been tweaked as well. Along with the new wrap-around tail lamps, you also get faux-air vents at the back for a sporty treatment. The new engine is the reason for so many sporty elements onboard.

Under the hood, you have a new 1.0 Litre turbo-petrol engine, which produces 122 BHP and 170 Nm of peak torque. The new engine is from Borg Warner and is a lot more powerful than the 1.5 Litre i-VTEC engine. The turbo unit comes mated to a CVT gearbox.

Honda will further introduce the 1.5 Litre petrol engine with the mild-hybrid system, that was shown on the new-generation Jazz. In India, we are also getting the BS-6 version of its existing 1.5 Litre i-DTEC diesel engine. The details of both these engines are yet to be told.

Other than exterior changes, the new Honda City also gets revisions to the cabin. The showcased-version gets an all-black interior with brushed metal finishing on the steering wheel, AC vents and gearbox. In the centre, the outdated infotainment makes way for new 8-inch touchscreen infotainment, vertical air-con vents and rotary knobs for climate control.

Safety features on the new sedan include six airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors with a rear-view camera, vehicle stability control and hill-start assist. The same features will be carried over on the India-spec version as well.

The new City will be heading out to India by mid-2020 to compete against its existing rivals including the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Vento, Toyota Yaris and Skoda Rapid. We would not see the City at the 2020 Auto Expo because Honda is not participating in it.
