Volkswagen T-Roc Finally Spotted Testing in India for the First Time.

The Volkswagen T-Roc will sit below the Tiguan in the brand’s lineup in India and will come to the country as a CBU to rival other mid-size SUVs in the segment.

Volkswagen has been finally caught testing the T-Roc SUV in India. We had earlier reported that Volkswagen is going to rain SUVs in India with the new T-Roc, T-Cross, the Tiguan All-Space and the new Touareg as well. The sight of the T-Roc in India also suggests that Volkswagen could preview this at the 2020 Auto Expo.

The T-Roc will sit below the Tiguan in Volkswagen India line-up and it will come to the country as a CBU. Dimensionally as well, the SUV is shorter in length than the Tiguan but it looks much sportier than its elder sibling. Volkswagen first previewed the T-Roc as a concept at the 2014 Geneva motor show and then it saw its world premiere at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show.

The T-Roc is underpinned by Volkswagen’s modular MQB platform which also underpins the Tiguan. The SUV gets a newly designed Volkswagen grille which are flanked by relatively slim headlamps. Volkswagen has kept up with the new trend of split headlamp design but their main headlamp cluster is on the top and LED DRLs and cornering lamps have been positioned on the bumper down below. There’s also a prominent trapezoidal-shaped cooling duct and a silver-coloured kick plate within the bumper’s lower section. The DRLs also double up as indicators, switching to orange colour when the turn signals are in operation.

On the sides, the SUV gets a sharp character line running down the length of the car and large wheelhouses with black body cladding to give it a distinct SUV look. The SUV also gets pronounced fenders and a chrome trim element that runs over the window line from the A-pillar and ends at the wide C-pillars. Also, as an option, the SUV gets a two-tone paint scheme in which the roof section, including the A-pillars and exterior mirror housings, boast a contrasting colour from the rest of the body.

Internationally, T-Roc has a ground clearance of 130mm. However, for India, Volkswagen will likely raise the ground clearance to up to 149mm (similar to the Tiguan) to help it better tackle our roads. The T-Roc is expected to be powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with 150 bhp in India. The engine will come mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It will most likely be a front-wheel-drive car and will not feature Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

Volkswagen is expected to price the T-Roc at around the Rs. 20 lakh mark. Its slightly on the expensive side on account of coming to the country as a CBU. It will rival other mid-sized SUVs in the country which includes the likes of the Hyundai Creta, the Kia Seltos, the Tata Harrier and the MG Hector. It is expected to launch in the first half of 2020 in India.
