BS-6 2020 Kawasaki Z650 to Launch in India by February!

The BS-6 Kawasaki Z650 comes with a BS-6 complaint engine with slightly reduced torque output and a new instrument console but will cost about half a lakh more.

Just a couple of days ago, Kawasaki launched the 2020 BS-6 Z900 in India and now, they are about to bring their second BS-6 motorcycle to India, the BS-6 Kawasaki Z650. Kawasaki is on a spree of updating their motorcycles to the upcoming BS-6 norms and the 2020 Kawasaki Z650 will be priced between Rs 6.25 lakh and Rs 6.50 lakh. The BS-4 spec of the Z650 retailed in India for a price of Rs 5.69 lakh (ex-showroom India). The BS-6 iteration of the Z650 thus costs about Rs. 56,000 more than the BS-4 spec. So what do you get for half a lakh more? Let’s find out.

While the 2020 iteration of the Z900 got a comprehensive set of updates, the new Z650 does not have so much to boast about. It does get a new LED headlight, which keeps in tune with Kawasaki naked’s Sugomi styling philosophy. The Z650 also gets a new 4.3-inch colour-TFT screen with very nice graphics. It also gets Bluetooth pairing capabilities for your smartphone.

As for the engine, the 649cc parallel-twin engine has been updated to meet the new Euro 5 and BS6 emission norms. Just like we saw with the Z900, Kawasaki has managed to keep the power output same at 68 bhp. However, the torque output has taken a slight hit and the engine now produces 64Nm at 6,700 rpm as opposed to 65.7Nm at 6500rpm in the BS-4 spec motorcycle. Sadly, the motorcycle remains devoid of electronic aids, aside from the dual-channel ABS unit.

There are no other changes on the motorcycle though. The only other change to report is that the new BS-6 Z650 gets new set of Dunlop rubber. Kawasaki has swapped the old Sportmax D214s for new Sportmax Roadsport 2 tyres which are claimed to be grippier than the old tyres. Interestingly, Kawasaki also says that the BS-6 Z650 is 3kg lighter than the previous iteration and now tips the scale at 186 kg (kerb weight). And that is without any other significant change to the motorcycle, mind you.

Although Kawasaki officially hasn’t announced any specific launch date for the BS-6 Z650 in India, we expect that this motorcycle will could see its launch in the country in late-January or early-February 2020. We could also be witnessing the arrival of its full-faired sibling, the 2020 Ninja 650, in the coming days. Stay tuned to know when both bikes actually go on sale.
