BS-6 Toyota Innova Crysta is expected to launch by January 2020.

The Toyota Innova Crysta is powered by two diesel engines and one petrol engine in India and all three engines will be updated to comply with the BS-6 norms.

With just three months left before the BS-6 emission norms kick in, more and more manufacturers are updating their cars to meet the upcoming norms. The latest update is from Toyota. They are expected to launch the BS-6 complaint Innova Crysta MPV in India as early as January 2020.

The Toyota Innova Crysta is currently powered by three engine options in India. There’s one petrol engine and two diesel engine options. The 2.7-liter petrol engine produces 165 bhp and 245 Nm of torque. The engine is paired to a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

As for the diesel engines, there’s a 2.4-liter unit which produces 150 bhp and 343 Nm of torque. The other 2.8-liter unit produces 175 bhp and 360Nm of torque. The former comes mated only to a 5-speed manual gearbox while the latter only gets the 6-speed automatic transmission. The good news is that all these three engines will be updated to comply with the BS-6 norms.

Toyota already offers cleaner Euro 6 versions of the 2.4-litre diesel and 2.8-litre diesel engine in its international models. The international-spec Hilux utilises the Euro 6 2.4-litre diesel engine while the Euro-spec Land Cruiser comes with the Euro 6 2.8-litre diesel engine. The Euro 6 emissions norms are at par with the BS-6 norms in India and an Euro 6 compliant engine is also naturally BS-6 complaint.

The India-spec 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre diesel engines will use AdBlue technology for treating emissions, just like the international-spec engines. However, this technology is quite expensive and the diesel versions of the Innova Crysta will see a substantial price hike when the BS-6 versions hit the showrooms next year. The Fortuner will also receive BS6 upgrades soon as it utilises the Innova’s 2.7-litre petrol and 2.8-litre diesel engines.

Currently, the Innova Crysta diesel is priced between Rs 14.93 lakh and Rs 22.43 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The Innova Crysta does not have a direct competitor in the Indian market within its price range. However, in the MPV segment, it rivals the Mahindra Marazzo, Tata Hexa and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga in the lower-end of the spectrum. The Innova Crysta will however see a brand new competitor in the form of Kia Carnival when it is launched next year. In fact, it will be more premium and more expensive than the Crysta.
