With just four months left until April 2020, most manufacturers are still yet to update their lineup, but here’s all the BS-6 cars you can currently buy in India already.
There are just four months left before the BS-6 norms kick in from April 2020. While many manufacturers are still yet to update their cars to comply with the upcoming emission norms, a lot of them already boast of quite a few BS-6 complaint cars up their sleeves. Now, the government has already announced that BS4 cars will be allowed to ply on the roads till the end of their registration period (15 years), even after the new emission norms come into play. So if you are in the market for a BS-6 vehicle, here’s a complete list of all the BS-6 compliant cars that you can currently buy in India.
Maruti Suzuki
Maruti Suzuki was one of the first brands to initiate converting their cars to comply with the upcoming norms. In fact, almost 70% of their lineup of cars is already BS-6 compliant. Maruti currently has four BS-6 petrol engines – an 800 cc three-cylinder unit, 1.0-litre three-cylinder motor, 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine, and a newest is the 1.5-litre K15 four-cylinder petrol engine. The 800cc and the 1.0L unit are offered in the S-Presso and the Alto range. The 1.2L engine is available with all the like Baleno, Swift, Dzire, and new Wagon R, while the bigger 1.5-litre engine powers the Ertiga and the XL6 in the utility vehicle segment.
Hyundai
Hyundai India currently has only two BS-6 compliant cars in their lineup – the Grand i10 Nios and the Elantra facelift. Both of these cars were introduced quite recently and they have been directly launched with BS-6 petrol engines. Hyundai is yet to update their entire existing lineup of cars to the upcoming emission norms. Hyundai will unveil the Aura compact sedan in a couple of days and that too will be BS-6 compliant from launch. As for the Nios, it gets a 1.2L BS-6 compliant petrol engine but the diesel engine in the Nios is still a BS4 unit. The Elantra facelift on the other hand uses a BS6 compliant 2.0-litre petrol engine.
Toyota
Toyota currently has only one BS-6 compliant car up their sleeve and that is the Glanza. The Glanza is essentially a re-badged Baleno and it gets the same BS-6 complaint 1.2-litre K-Series four-cylinder engine from the Baleno. Toyota is yet to update their cars to comply with the upcoming emission norms.
Kia Motors
Kia has launched the Seltos in India with BS-6 compliant petrol and diesel engine right from the start. The Seltos has been a hotseller right since its debut and its BS-6 compliance is a major reason for that. The Seltos gets two BS-6 complaint petrol engines and one diesel engine. There’s a 1.4-litre GDI turbo petrol motor, 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and lastly, a 1.5-litre VGT diesel engine.
Jeep
Jeep launched an off-road biased variant of the Compass – Compass Trailhawk – in India this year and that too gets a BS-6 compliant engine right from launch. The Compass Trailhawk is powered by the same 2.0-litre Multijet II diesel engine as the regular Compass but the latter is not BS-6 compliant yet.
Mercedes-Benz
Now coming to some luxury car makers, Mercedes Benz India was the first manufacturer to offer a BS6 compliant vehicle with the launch of the Mercedes-Benz S350d. It gets a 3.0L diesel engine making it the first BS-6 compliant diesel engine in India. Mercedes then introduced the E-Class LWB version with the E 200 petrol, powered by a BS6 compliant 2.0-litre, four-cylinder M 264 engine. More recently, Mercedes-Benz launched the G 350d in India with a 3.0-litre, in-line six-cylinder BS-6 diesel engine.

Audi
Audi also has just one BS-6 compliant vehicle in India and that is the new-gen Audi A6. Under the hood, the 2020 Audi A6 draws power from a BS-6 compliant 2.0-litre TFSI petrol motor. Audi is yet to update their entire range of cars in India to be BS-6 compliant.

BMW
Lastly, there’s BMW who recently announced converting its complete line-up to BS6 from BS4. All BMW models with a petrol engine now conform to BS6 standards while the diesel models will be upgraded to BS6 well before April 2020. The Chennai plant has already begun manufacturing BS6 diesel variants of the 5 Series and the 6 Series Gran Turismo. The next model to get a BS6 diesel engine will be the X1. The latest car models launched by BMW India in 2019 are available in both BS4 and BS6 variants and customers have the option of choosing either.
