Hyundai Begins Feasibility Study of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles in India!

In an attempt to reduce carbon footprint, Hyundai starts testing the feasibility of fuel cell vehicles in India which could mean Hyundai might bring the Nexo FCEV to India.

Hyundai Motor India has announced another initiative for expanding its green mobility portfolio in India. Hyundai India is evaluating the feasibility of bringing Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles for India to strengthen its commitment towards greener mobility eco system. This could mean that Hyundai might be introducing the Nexo FCEV to our market. As a matter of fact, Hyundai has showcased the Nexo in India before, at the 2018 India-Korea Business Summit, in New Delhi.

Hyundai likes to call it the “the ultimate eco-friendly mobility solution.” Just like battery electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles have zero greenhouse gases or particulate matter. The Nexo comes with a 95kW fuel cell that powers an electric motor generating 161hp and 395Nm of peak torque. With a WLTP-certified range of 666km, a 0-100kph time of 9.2sec and a 177kph top speed, the Nexo is Hyundai’s technological flagship.

Commenting on the Initiation of Feasibility Study for Fuel Cell Vehicle, Mr S S Kim, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, said, “Progress for Humanity with Zero Emission Mobility is our responsibility and vision to make a long-term positive transformation for our future generations. We have initiated the feasibility study for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle in India and promise to bring The Ultimate Solution with Zero Emission Mobility.”

Besides being powered by a state-of-the-art powertrain , the Nexo all-electric SUV gets an expansive array of autonomous driving aids in the international markets. That includes a next-generation blind spot monitor, Lane Following Assist (LFA) and Highway Driving Assist (HDA) and a self-parking function. If at all Nexo makes it to India, it’ll likely come as a CBU and some of these functions will surely not make it to our shores.

In terms of design, the Nexo typically looks like a Hyundai. In fact, we have already seen some of these styling elements of the Kona as well. There are other signature Hyundai elements like the cascading grille as well and the raised SUV-like silhouette gives the Nexo some presence on the road. On the inside, the Nexo fuel cell vehicle features two LCD screens that combine to make a 12.3-inch display. Meanwhile, Hyundai has already carved a niche for themselves with India’s first mass market electric vehicle – the Kona – and they are also working on a much more affordable EV for the Indian market as well.
