Petrol And Diesel Prices Might Be Hiked Soon Due To BS-6 Norms

Due to the heavy costs of upgrading to BS-6 fuels, Hindustan Petrol and Bharat Petroleum are demanding increase in the prices of petrol and diesel.

Refineries like HPCL and BPCL have already started converting their BS-4 fuels to BS-6 fuels, which is costing them nearly Rs 35,000 crore. The heavy investments have taken a toll on their profits and there is no consideration from Government for this.

The refineries are now demanding the government to increase the prices of diesel and petrol, so that they can recover their investments. For conversion from BS-4 to BS-6 fuels and engines has made a heavy dent on the refineries as well as automotive companies.

Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and other companies are asking for the petrol prices to be increased by Rs 0.80 per litre and the diesel prices by Rs 1.45 per litre. If this hike comes in play, it will stay for a long time.

BS-6 norms are stricter than the BS-4 norms and that also comes because the BS-5 norms were missed. As a result, the emission levels through the engines have been lowered down by a significant margin for which, automakers had to do major upgrades to the engines.

This has also led to the discontinuation of many four-wheelers and two-wheelers. Companies include Maruti Suzuki, Volkswagen, Skoda and Renault have already decided to discontinue their diesel engines permanently.

The deadline for BS-6 norms is scheduled to kick in from April 2020, post which no BS-4 vehicle shall be sold or produced. As a result, many have also halted their production to clear the existing BS-4 inventory, then proceed further.
