Production-spec 2020 Hyundai Creta Spied testing in India

In one of the spy images, the 2020 Hyundai Creta was seen with dual exhaust tips. Does this mean the new Creta could come with a turbo-petrol engine?

A production spec 2020 Hyundai Creta was spotted testing on the outskirts of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, recently. The Creta has been an absolute hit for Hyundai in India and the model is due its generation update that is expected to debut at the 2020 Auto Expo. This is only the second generation of the Creta and this new model is based on the same platform as the Kia Seltos. The Kia Seltos is also its primary rival in the Indian market.

The 2020 Creta is larger than its predecessor and it will also come with BS-6 compliant engines. The second generation of the Creta has debuted in China and while the India-spec model will look largely similar, there will also be certain differences. For example, the honeycomb mesh grille seen on the China-spec model will be substituted with a slatted grille like we see in the Venue. The headlamp unit is completely new with a split headlight setup with LED DRLs and projector lamps. In profile, the 17-inch alloy wheels and the glass area look similar to the existing Creta. Moving on to the back, you can notice the split tail lamps that come with LED elements.

On the inside, the cabin in completely new as we have seen in the China-spec model. The dashboard gets a Tesla-like huge horizontal touchscreen infotainment system along with a digital driver’s display. There are minimal use of buttons. Just like the Seltos, the 2020 Creta will come loaded with features like BlueLink connected car tech, a panoramic sunroof, cruise control, climate control, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charger, ventilated seats, powered front seats as well as keyless entry with push-button start.

Under the hood, the 2020 Hyundai Creta will be powered by 1.5 liter BS-6 petrol and diesel engines. The diesel engine develops 115bhp and 250Nm while the petrol engine puts out 115bhp and 144Nm. Both engines will most likely come with a 6-speed manual gearbox. As for the automatics, the diesel engine could be paired a 6-speed torque converter while the petrol variant could get a CVT like the Seltos.

In another spy image, the Creta was seen with dual-tone exhaust tips at the rear. Could this mean that Hyundai might introduce a turbo-petrol engine for the Creta juts like Kia has for the Seltos. We will have to wait for more information on this. The new model will be more expensive than the current Creta which starts from Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). When launched, the Creta will renew its rivalry with the Kia Seltos, MG Hector, Tata Harrier and Mahindra XUV500.
