Skoda Mid-Size SUV to launch in India in Q2 of 2021!

This new Creta rivaling mid-size SUV from Skoda in India will be based on the Kamiq that is sold internationally and it is the Skoda car under the India 2.0 programme.

There is an entire slew of SUVs coming from Skoda in the next two years. Skoda has already been working on their much talked about mid-size SUV and it will be most likely called the Kamiq. According to a statement made by Zac Hollis, director of sales, service and marketing, Skoda Auto India, the new Skoda mid-size SUV will be launched in India by mid-2021. More precisely, in Q2 of 2021, in between April to June.

Like most other new Skoda and Volkswagen cars, this new Creta rivalling mid-size SUV from Skoda will be based on the MQB AO IN platform, which is a version of the MQB platform used internationally that’s tweaked for our market. Dimensionally, the SUV is expected to measure about 4.2-4.3 meters in length which will be marginally longer in its wheelbase than the international model to create greater space for the rear seat passenger.

In terms of styling, the India-spec Skoda mid-size SUV is expected to be identical to the Kamiq that is sold abroad. However, there will be some styling tweaks to the India-spec model to suit local tastes and preferences. For example, we can expect the India-spec SUV to use greater amounts of chrome than the international version.

On the inside, you can expect the cabin to have a typical Skoda family design language. The design will be clean and minimalist, a lot similar to the newer Skoda cars we find in India. The SUV is expected to come equipped with an 8.0-inch infotainment system, automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, ambient cabin lighting, and more.

Skoda hasn’t talked anything about what they are going to put under the hood of the India-spec mid-size SUV. However, we expect it to be powered by either a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine and a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. There is also a possibility of a factory fitted CNG option, though there will not be any diesel powertrain on offer in India.

It must be mentioned that the Kamiq will be the first car from Skoda under the Volkswagen Group’s India 2.0 programme. The Kamiq will then be followed by the replacement of the Rapid sedan towards the end of 2021. Skoda is also expected to showcase the Kamiq in concept form at the 2020 Auto Expo. Once launched, the Kamiq will face competition from the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Hector and Tata Harrier in our market.
