Skoda Rapid To Lose Out On Its 1.5 Litre Diesel Engine Post BS-6

Skoda is going to discontinue the Rapid diesel once the BS-6 norms are in place. The same engine powers Polo, Vento and Ameo as well.

After Volkswagen decided to discontinue diesel engines in India, its Indian partner has decided the same as well. Skoda is going to cut down the 1.5 Litre TDI diesel engine that powers the Rapid sedan.

The Skoda Rapid diesel would not be able to make it through the upcoming BS-6 norms. The same engine has been with the Rapid for a long time. Also, the unit powers the Polo, Ameo and Vento, which will also be available without diesel engines.

The 1.5 Litre TDI unit produces 110 BHP and 250 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options include a 5-speed gearbox and a 7-speed DSG. Most likely, Skoda will add a 1.0 L TSI turbo-petrol engine in replacement to that.

Reports suggest that the turbo-petrol unit will come with a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 7-speed DSG. This same engine could also come mated to a CNG kit. The other petrol engine that Skoda offers is the 1.6 Litre petrol engine, which produces 105 BHP. This might also be cut off post the BS-6 norms.

Skoda Rapid is amongst the underrated cars in its segment, rivalling the Maruti Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Toyota Yaris and Volkswagen Vento. The Rapid is priced starting off at Rs 8.81 Lakhs up to Rs 12.43 Lakhs for the petrol variant. The diesel variants start at Rs 10.06 Lakhs up to Rs 13.99 Lakhs (all prices ex-showroom).

Meanwhile, Skoda is planning to launch the new Rapid sedan by 2021. It has been spied testing globally and now looks inspired by the bigger brother Octavia. Along with some minor tweaks to its styling, the Rapid will also be loaded with many new features.
