The Skoda Rapid will be launched with a new BS-6 1.0L, three cylinder turbo-petrol engine in April 2020 but this time there will be no diesel variant of the Rapid.
Recently, Skoda has revealed the launch timelines of several of its cars that are coming in the next two years. We have the Karoq coming as early as April 2020 and then the Superb facelift in May followed by the petrol version of the Kodiaq by the end of 2020. Now, Zac Hollis, director, sales, service and marketing, Skoda Auto India, has also revealed on Twitter that the BS-6 compliant Rapid will arrive in April 2020.
As we have already reported, Skoda India is going to completely change its engine lineup, come April 2020. The 1.5 liter diesel engine that it shares with Volkswagen in several cars will not be updated to meet the BS-6 norms. The current 1.6 liter petrol engine will also cease to exist in the Rapid.
Instead, the Rapid will get a new 1.0 liter, three cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine. The engine will come paired to either a manual or a 7-speed DSG gearbox. The new 1.0-litre unit is from the EA211 series and comes in two states of tune in international markets – 94hp/160Nm and 115hp/200Nm. We expect the latter and more powerful state of tune to be offered on the midsize sedan in India. In fact, the same engine will also eventually make its way to the Polo and Vento.

That said, there’s a brand new midsize sedan that Skoda is currently working on and it will soon replace the Rapid in the Indian market from 2021. Its set to arrive by late 2021 and that’s the same year when Skoda will also debut their first mid-size SUV. Like most other new Skoda and Volkswagen cars, the Rapid replacement will also be underpinned by a tailored-for-India version of the modular MQB A0 platform, known as MQB A0 IN.

Even at the 2020 Auto Expo, Skoda is going to have one of the most exciting stalls with a bunch full of cars. The Expo will see the return of the mighty Octabia VRS to India and we also hope to see the facelifted Superb. There’s a lot going on at Skoda and we can’t wait to experience all of that. When it arrives, the BS6 Rapid will rival the petrol powered Honda City and Hyundai Verna along with the BS6-compliant versions of the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Volkswagen Vento, and Toyota Yaris.
