BS6 Toyota Fortuner Bookings Open; Launch to Happen Soon.

Both the 2.8 liter diesel and 2.7 liter petrol engines in the Toyota Fortuner will be updated to BS6 standards but it is expected to see a steep hike in price.

With the BS6 emission deadline approaching closer and closer, there are going to be slew of BS6 launches for every manufacturer now. Toyota will soon be launching the BS6 Fortuner in the coming weeks. Toyota has opened bookings for the BS6 Fortuner and select Toyota dealerships across the country have unofficially begun accepting bookings. The booking amount has been set at Rs. 50,000.

The Fortuner is powered by two engines in India – there’s a 2.8 liter turbo-diesel engine and 2.7 liter petrol engine. Both the engines will be updated to comply with the BS6 norms. We expect that the engines will not see any difference in their outputs with the BS6 update. The 2.8-litre, four cylinder turbo-diesel engine produces 177hp and 420Nm of torque in BS4 spec and we expect it to remain the same. The output of the BS6-compliant 2.7-litre, four-cylinder petrol unit is also expected to remain unchanged at 166hp and 245Nm of torque.

Interestingly, the 2.8 liter turbo-diesel engine also came on the BS4 spec Toyota Innova Crysta but with the BS6 update, Toyota has discontinued that engine in the Innova Crysta. Coming back to the Fortuner, both the engine will either come mated to 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. In fact, the diesel engine produces 30 Nm of more torque when paired with the automatic gearbox. The diesel will also continue to be offered with four-wheel drive (4WD) and rear-wheel drive (RWD) options, while the petrol will only come with the latter.

Other than the BS6 compliance, the Fortuner will remain more or less unchanged. On the interiors, the dashboard and features list will also remain identical. It will come with two interior colour schemes – dark brown and Chamois (beige) – as before. Features on board will include a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with embedded navigation, paddleshifters (for the automatic only), 7 airbags, vehicle stability control with brake assist, hill-assist control and ABS with EBD will also be present on the higher-spec variants.

The Fortuner is however expected to see a steep increase in price with the BS6 update. The Innova Crysta saw a bump in price by around Rs 39,000-1.12 lakh for the diesel and we expect a similar price hike for the Fortuner as well. Currently, the BS4 Fortuner petrol is priced between Rs 28.18-29.77 lakh, while diesel prices range from Rs 30.19-34.20 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Once updated, the SUV will continue to compete against the likes of the Ford Endeavour, Mahindra Alturas G4 and Isuzu MU-X, all of which are yet to be updated to BS6 emission standards.
