Volkswagen Drops Passat from India Website; BS-6 Passat in the Pipeline!

Volkswagen has discontinued the Passat in India right now as it still runs a BS-4 spec engine but it will be re-introduced with a BS-6 engine soon with styling updates as well.

The current generation Volkswagen Passat has been discontinued in India. Volkswagen has taken the Passat off their official India website and it won’t be available to customers for buying, at least for the moment, since the car uses a BS4 engine. However, Volkswagen will soon bring the Passat back with a BS-6 compliant powertrain and revamped styling as well.

Volkswagen had previously said that they would discontinue all their diesel engines in India. So when the new Passat comes, it will initially be launched with a 2.0 liter TSI petrol engine. Incidentally, this same engine will also do duty on the upcoming Skoda Superb facelift. The 2.0 liter TSI engine produces 190bhp and 320Nm of torque and power will be sent only to the front wheels. We expect this powertrain to be offered with a 7-speed DSG only.

However, if Volkswagen sees that there is sufficient demand for diesel cars in the BS-6 era, they will most likely re-introduce the 2.0 liter TDI diesel engine, albeit with its BS-6 update. In an interview with Zigwheels, the Head of Volkswagen India, Steffen Knapp, said “very high likelihood that we’ll continue with diesel.” The 2.0 liter diesel engine produces 177bhp and 350Nm of torque in the BS-4 spec Passat and we expect the numbers to remain identical in the BS-6 spec Passat as well. For compliance with the stricter emission norms, VW will use AdBlue technology, as seen in most global vehicles with the same engine. However, this could result in a hefty price hike.

The 2020 BS-6 Volkswagen Passat will come with some styling updates as well. These will be in the form of new LED headlamps and tail lamps and there will be newly designed alloy wheels on offer as well. On the interiors, the BS-6 car is expected to gain an all-digital instrument cluster and a bigger 9.2-inch infotainment system with connected car technology.

Volkswagen could in fact showcase the BS-6 Passat at the Auto Expo 2020. When launched, the BS-6 PAssat will be more expensive than the current car on account of new features and BS-6 engine. Currently, the Passat retailed in India for a price of Rs 29.99 lakh (ex-showroom). When launched, it will renew its rivalries with the Toyota Camry hybrid and the upcoming Skoda Superb facelift.
