2020 Auto Expo – MG Gloster Full-Size SUV Unveiled

The MG Gloster will go on sale around Diwali this year and its a full-size SUV that’s deemed to be more premium than its rivals like the Endeavor and Fortuner in India.

MG Motors have officially taken the wraps off the Gloster SUV in India. This SUV is already on sale in Australian and Chinese markets under the LDV and Maxus brands, respectively. Just like MG Motors, Maxus is also a subsidiary of SAIC. The MG Gloster is scheduled to be launched in India by Diwali 2020.

The Gloster is going to be MG’s new flagship in India. When its launched in India, it will be a full-size SUV with three rows of seating like the Toyota Fortuner, the Ford Endeavor and Mahindra Alturas G4 in India. However, it is considerably larger than them and will be priced a little more than them too. In fact, its deemed to be a cheaper alternative to the Toyota Land Cruiser and Prado in India.

Just like its rivals, the Gloster is also built on a ladder-frame chassis. In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 5,005mm in length, 1,932mm in width, 1,875mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,950mm. That makes the Gloster larger than all of its rivals in India. You can thus expect tons of space on the inside.

One look at the Gloster and you know this SUV means business. It will come with the signature MG grille replete with lots of chrome bits. It will also have more chrome on its window line and on the doors, just like the Hector. The India-spec Gloster will also get unique alloy wheel design and interior bits to name a few other changes expected compared to model on sale elsewhere. The Gloster sports a chunky design and a bold, upright stance.

If we are to go by the international-spec D90, then it comes very well kitted on the interiors. Expect MG Motor’s version of Maxus D90 to come with 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster, three-zone climate control, cooled/heated seats, a panoramic sunroof and a 360-degree camera on the range topping trims. It is also equipped with safety features such as autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assist and the automatic parking function. The SUV for India is expected to at least sport six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP and Isofix child-seat mounts

MG’s parent company SAIC has been working on a new 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine that will produce 218hp and 480Nm of peak torque. This is the engine that is expected to power the India-spec Gloster, which by the way, is said to be developed from the FCA’s Multijet II engine. The engine will be BS6 compliant from the launch itself. Transmission options will include a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed torque converter AT.

As told earlier, it will create its own space in the segment, severely undercutting the prices of its rivals. To make its first impressions strong, MG will definitely price it aggressively despite offering many upmarket features.
