BS6 Skoda Rapid Will Lose Out On 7-Speed DSG Gearbox

Just like Volkswagen will be ditching the 7-speed DSG gearbox for the Polo and Vento, Skoda will also replace the 7-speed DSG on the BS6 Rapid with a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

Skoda recently unveiled the 2020 BS6 compliant Rapid sedan at the 2020 Auto Expo. Currently, Skoda offers the Rapid TDI with a 7-speed DSG gearbox. The Rapid’s sister car, the Volkswagen Vento also comes with the 7-speed gearbox in its Vento TSI variant. However, with the BS6 update, Skoda will discontinue the famed 7-speed DSG gearbox in the Rapid and offer a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox instead.

The new BS6 Skoda Rapid will hit the showrooms soon in April 2020. We had already reported to you about Volkswagen doing the same with the BS6 compliant versions of the Polo and the Vento. Even the Polo and Vento will lose out on the quick-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox for a new 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter gearbox.

Skoda Auto India’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Zac Hollis, recently confirmed the same in a tweet saying, “Yes the new Rapid is not DSG”. The Rapid BS6 will come with a BS6-compliant 1.0-litre TSI engine developing 115PS of power and 200Nm of torque. And like we said before, this engine will be paired with the 6-speed torque converter gearbox, the same unit which will be offered on the BS6 Vento and Polo.

The reason for discontinuing the 7-speed DSG gearbox in India by Skoda Volkswagen is because this gearbox had quality issues operating in India. The stop-go traffic conditions on Indian roads made the gearbox quite jerky and didn’t operate quite as smoothly. Despite their improved fuel efficiency and improved performance, Skoda Volkswagen decided to go with the 6-speed torque converter unit. Moreover, it would also be a cost effective option.

Meanwhile, the Rapid’s existing 1.5-litre TDI and 1.6-litre MPI engine options won’t be upgraded to meet BS6 emission norms and will eventually face the axe. The diesel motor develops 110PS and 250Nm while the petrol motor puts out 105PS and 150Nm. Other updates in the 2020 Rapid include larger 17-inch alloy wheels in the Monte Carlo version and a stealthy matte paint option. The 2020 Skoda Rapid is expected to be priced above the existing model, which starts from Rs 8.82 lakh (ex-showroom). It will lock horns with the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Honda City 2020, and the upcoming Volkswagen Vento BS6.
