The 2020 Honda Africa Twin comes with an updated engine, an updated chassis, new electronics and perhaps with a lot of potential too. Its going to launch in India on March 5.
Honda has just announced that they will be launching the new 2020 Africa Twin in India on March 5, 2020. The new Honda Africa Twin made its debut in the international markets in September last year and it has brought in a number of updates. The new CRF1100 Africa Twin, just like the older model, is available in two variants – the standard model and the Adventure Sports.
The 2020 Honda Africa Twin is powered by a 1084cc, parallel-twin, liquid-cooled engine. Yes, the displacement has gone up by 86cc. The international-spec engine now produces peak output figures of 102hp at 7,500rpm and 105Nm at 6,250rpm. Even that is a slight bump from the 95hp at 7,500rpm and 98Nm at 6,000rpm over the older motorcycle. However, Honda offered the previous-gen Africa Twin in India with a slightly detuned engine that made 89hp at 7,500rpm and 93.1Nm at 6,000rpm. We are expecting the same treatment to be meted out to the 2020 Africa Twin as well when its launched here.
There are some changes to the chassis as well. The new frame has been updated for “optimised handling characteristics”. The rear subframe is now made of aluminum and is detachable. The swingarm is new as well and Honda claims its lighter and more rigid than before. The new motorcycle is also lighter than before across the entire range. Even the base Africa Twin – which anyway is the lightest – has gone from weighing 230kg in 2019 to 227kg for 2020.
On the electronics front, the 2020 Honda Africa Twin gets a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU), wheelie control, cornering ABS, rear-lift control, DCT cornering detection and cornering lights. There’s a new 6.5-inch TFT display that’s even compatible with Apple CarPlay and for the first time, the motorcycle also gets cruise control as standard. The Adventure Sports ES model offers some additional features like Showa Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment (EERA) suspension, tubeless wheels, heated grips, charging socket, a larger skid plate, an aluminium rear rack and a larger fuel tank.

The current-gen Africa Twin Adventure Sports gets additonal suspension travel over the base model. However, with the 2020 motorcycle, the suspension travel will be identical for all the variants of the Africa Twin. In fact, the front suspension travel has been reduced from 25cm to 23cm for the new bike. Like before, the bike will be available in either a Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) version or a manual transmission version.

In India however, Honda sells the current-gen Africa Twin with only the DCT transmission and it remains to be seen if Honda does the same with the new bike as well. In the US, the bikes have been priced at $14,399 (Rs 10.33 lakh) and $17,199 (Rs 12.34 lakh) for the base manual gearbox and Adventure Sports SE variants, respectively, while the DCT-equipped bikes carry a price tag of $15,199 (Rs 10.90 lakh) and $17,999 (Rs 12.91 lakh). For reference, the Africa Twin DCT on sale here is priced at Rs 13.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
