Hyundai has removed the i20 Active from the company’s website in India which is hinting that Hyundai will not be updating the i20 Active to meet the upcoming BS6 norms.
In the run up to the BS6 emission norms, Hyundai has now removed the i20 Active from their official website in India. This essentially means that the Hyundai i20 Active will not be updated to meet the BS6 emission norms. We had reported earlier that Hyundai has recently discontinued petrol CVT and diesel variants of the Elite i20 premium hatchback as well. Currently, Hyundai is only selling the petrol manual variants of Elite i20 and that’s the only variant that will be updated to the BS6 norms till Hyundai awaits the arrival of the next-gen i20.
The Hyundai i20 Active was essentially a crossover-hatchback based on the regular Elite i20. It came with different styling elements like roof rails, front and rear silver scuff plates and black plastic body cladding along with differently styled alloy wheels. It was however mechanically identical to the regular i20. The petrol engine was a 1.2-liter unit which produced 82 hp and 115 Nm of torque. The diesel unit displaced 1.4-liter and dished out 89 hp and 220 Nm of torque. The former was equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission while the latter received a 6-speed manual unit.
It remains to be seen if Hyundai will introduce a new Active variant for the next-gen i20 or not. It was trend in its time to put on some rugged elements on a hatchback, raise the ground clearance by some bits and there you have it, a cross-hatch. In a similar fashion, we saw other cross-hatchbacks as well like the VW Polo Cross and also the Ford Freestyle. However, that trend has long gone and the market has entirely shifted to SUVs now. In essence, a hatchback does not need to come dressed as an SUV anymore. We might thus never see the Active variant on the next-gen i20.

That said, the next-gen i20 is just round the corner, scheduled to be unveiled in June this year. The new hatchback comes with brand new styling and from the teaser images and numerous spy shots, we can tell that its going to be a good looking car. On the inside, it will come with a new dashboard layout and segment leading features like you would expect from Hyundai.

We expect the new Hyundai i20 to be offered with two petrol and a diesel engine option in India. The current 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine with BS6 update is likely to serve the entry level variants while the higher variants are expected to be powered by the new 1.0-liter turbocharged petrol unit. The diesel engine of choice is expected to be a detuned version of 1.5-liter engine which powers the brisk selling Kia Seltos. The 2020 Hyundai i20 is slated to be launched in the middle of this year and India is expected to be the launch market.
