Maruti Jimny Price In India, Launch, Engine And Off-Roading Features

Maruti Suzuki Jimny Price In India / Launch Date / Engine Specifications / Gearbox / Features / Off-Roading Features / Dimensions / Safety Features

Maruti finally showcased the Jimny at the Auto Expo 2020. The globally popular SUV is a replacement for the Gypsy for other markets and most likely, for our market too. Since the past few years, there are rumours of it launching in India, but this time, it is actually happening.

The price and positioning of Maruti Jimny will be under Vitara Brezza. Further, it will look identical to the global-spec but will get different dimensions, features and engine. Moreover, we will only get the 5-door version and not the 3-door one.

Maruti Jimny Price

Expected
Price (ex-showroom) Rs 6 Lakhs to Rs 8 Lakhs

Maruti is going to position the Jimny under Vitara Brezza. Its prices will be identical to the original Gypsy, expected between Rs 6 Lakhs to Rs 8 Lakhs. It could be offered in two variants, the higher-spec offered with some off-roading equipment.

Maruti Jimny Launch Date

Jimny
Launch Date November 2020

Reports suggest that Maruti is most likely to launch the Jimny by the festive season this year. Gypsy occupied the position of the most affordable off-roading car, which Jimny will and also needs to fill in for.

Maruti Jimny Engine Specifications

Engine 1.5 Litre four-cylinder K15B
Power 104 BHP
Torque 138 Nm

Under the hood, Jimny will mostly get the 1.5 Litre four-cylinder K15B petrol engine. There were rumours of it getting the smaller 1.2 Litre engine, but those chances are highly unlikely. The motor produces 104 BHP and 138 Nm of peak torque.

The engine will get oodles of low-end torque and probably, longer gear ratios. Mileage figures should be around 18-19 kmpl.

Maruti Jimny Gearbox

Engine 1.5 Litre four-cylinder petrol
Gearbox 5-speed MT/4-speed AT

Jimny will come mated to a 5-speed MT and a 4-speed AT. We are not expecting Maruti to offer AMT here. If any off-road spec variant is launched, it will definitely get the manual gearbox only.

Maruti Jimny Features

  1. SmartPlay Studio Touchscreen Infotainment System
  2. Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Voice Recognition
  3. Projector Headlamps
  4. Automatic AC
  5. Cruise Control
  6. Auto Headlamps
  7. Height Adjustable Driver Seat

Maruti Jimny Off-Roading Features

We are expecting Maruti to offer the top-spec variant with multiple off-roading features like:

  1. Vertical Windshield with Flat Bonnet For Better Visibility
  2. Off-Road Friendly Front And Rear Bumpers with Specialized Angles
  3. Body Cladding
  4. High Ground Clearance
  5. Hill Hold Control

The global-spec Jimny also gets an active 4X4 system with low-range gearbox transfer case and hill-hold control. Most likely, the first two features would not come on the India-spec Jimny.

Maruti Jimny Safety Features

  1. Dual Front Airbags
  2. ABS with EBD
  3. Rear Parking Sensors
  4. Rear Parking Camera

Maruti Jimny Dimensions

Length 3570mm
Width 1645mm
Height 1730mm
Wheelbase 2250mm
Weight 1135 Kgs

Going by the dimensions, Jimny will definitely be a sub-4-metre SUV in India. Globally, it is 3570mm long, 1645mm wide and 1730mm tall. Once it comes to India, it might be a bit longer than the global spec version. Its wheelbase will remain the same at 2250mm and will be just 1135 kgs.

If Maruti manages to shred more weight on the Jimny, it will get more off-road friendly. Gypsy was around 1040 kgs and even if Jimny is about 1135 kgs, it will be termed light-weight and probably, peppy too.

Design Review

Here, as well as in the global market, Maruti Jimny comes in as a replacement to the Gypsy or the second-generation Jimny. That’s what it was called in the foreign markets. It carries on the boxy-SUV and tall-boy look with styling of what we call a good looking off-roader. There are sharp creases all over the body with big round headlamps, beefy body cladding and high ground clearance.

We will get the five-door version and not the three-door version. The latter was better looking, even though there is no difference between them. Yes, of course, there are some characteristics borrowed from the Jeep.

Competition

Just like the Gypsy, Maruti Jimny will face no competition. If the prices go above Rs 10 Lakhs, which is highly unlikely, it will compete with 2020 Mahindra Thar. The company will definitely put it in as the most-affordable off-roader and lifestyle vehicle. Mahindra is going to launch the updated Thar soon, which will be costlier than the earlier version. It will go easily up to Rs 14-15 Lakhs on road.
