Next-Gen 2020 Mahindra Thar to Get a 2.0L Turbocharged Petrol Engine

Mahindra unveiled their mStallion range of BS6 turbocharged petrol engines at the 2020 Auto Expo and announced that it will power the next-gen Thar, Scorpio and XUV500.

It was hugely anticipated that Mahindra would be showcasing the next-gen 2020 Thar at the 2020 Auto Expo. While that did not happen, Mahindra has revealed what will be powering the next-gen Thar by unveiling its new mStallion range of BS6-compliant, turbocharged petrol engines.

Mahindra has announced that the next-gen 2020 Thar will be powered by a 2.0-litre TGDI petrol motor. The Thar has already been spied several times and we have reported you with all spy images over the course of last year. With the Thar set to get a turbo-petrol engine and even Renault showcasing the Duster with a 1.3 liter turbo-petrol engine at the 2020 Auto Expo, it seems that SUVs with turbo-petrol engines is going to be the next trend in the country.

The 2.0 liter turbo-petrol engine produces an impressive 190PS of power and 380Nm of torque. Those are very impressive numbers for a 2.0L petrol engine. Transmission options are likely to consist of a 6-speed manual and a torque converter with four-wheel-drive. In fact, this 2.0L engine will also make it to the new Scorpio and the next-gen XUV500. A BS6-compliant 2.0-litre diesel engine will also join the Thar’s engine lineup, with expected output figures of 140PS of power and 320Nm.

In terms of design, the upcoming SUV will take inspiration from the Jeep Wrangler and gets the seven slat grille upfront. It will also come with factory fitted hardtop and will be bigger in dimensions. It will carry the rugged muscular design and now gets fresh front and rear bumpers. There will be newly designed 17-inch wheels with the higher trims expected to get larger, 18-inch alloy wheels and a long list of creature comforts. It will also get LED daytime running lights and LED tail lamps for the first time in its lifetime.

The interiors of the next-gen Mahindra Thar has been completely redesigned and it gets a fresh new dashboard. The new Thar will be a lot more comfort-orientated and much less utilitarian than the model it’ll replace. There’s a touchscreen infotainment system which is expected to come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support and will also double as a display for the reverse camera.

Expect the 2020 Thar to be launched shortly after its unveil later this year. It is likely to be priced at a premium over the Thar 700 which starts at Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Once launched, it will take on the likes of the Force Gurkha which was also unveiled at Auto Expo 2020 and is slated for launch later this year.
