Upcoming Maxi-Scooters in India This Year – Detailed List

Maxi-scooters are the newest trend in India in the scooter segment and here’s all the upcoming maxi-scooters from the Honda Forza 300, Aprilia SXR 160 and more.

The scooter segment in India has not been all that exciting except for the exception of the Aprilia SR 160. That’s a scooter which has really set a benchmark for performance for all other scooters. You could also count the Vespas for their quirky styling but apart from that, we haven’t had anything that really excites us. Well, that perhaps might change very soon as the scooter segment in India has been hit by a new trend – Maxi-Scooters.

So what are Maxi-Scooters? Well, Maxi-Scooters are inherently much larger than your regular scooters as they offer a lot more space, a lot more comfort and even have motorcycle rivaling performance. We have quite a few upcoming Maxi Scooters in India this year and here’s a list of them with all that’s important to know about them.

Honda Forza 300

Honda Forza 300 is perhaps the most exciting upcoming maxi-scooters in India

The Honda Forza 300 is a sport maxi-scooter that has already been on sale in Europe. And as the name already suggest, this maxi scooter has a 300cc engine that it can boast about. The 300cc liquid-cooled and fuel-injected single-cylinder engine puts out 25.1PS and 27.2Nm. Those are quite healthy numbers and Honda claims the Forza 300 can reach a top speed of 125kmph. We haven’t had any scooter in India that can even reach 100 kph.

The Forza 300 is also a very stylish looking scooter. It has quite a beefed up body work with a large headlamps and perhaps more cuts and creases on the body work than a 300cc motorcycle. It also has enough storage under the seats to accommodate two full-size helmets.

Honda will be bringing the Forza 300 to India via the CKD unit and it will inevitably be on the premium side in terms of pricing. We expect it to be priced around Rs 2.5 to Rs 2.8 lakh but its still good value considering the features and performance on offer. Honda has already sold four units of the Forza 300 in India which were brought in for customer feedback. These four units were Euro 4/BS6 compliant models. However, Honda will officially launch the Euro 5/BS6 compliant Forza 300’s towards the end of this year.

Aprilia SXR 160

Aprilia showed off their upcoming maxi-scooter at the 2020 Auto Expo. The Aprilia SXR 160 is essentially based on the SR 160 moto-scooter but gets a larger maxi-scooter bodywork and more spacious seats and more features as well. It uses the same powertrain and underpinnings as the SR 160. The SXR will also be available with a 125cc engine in the future. The 160cc motor produces 11 bhp and 11.6 Nm of torque. Also, it gets fuel injection system as standard fitment. The 125cc engine produces around 10bhp of power and comes with fuel injection as well.

It has to be said that the Aprilia SXR 160 is a handsome looking scooter. Italians always gets styling right, don’t they? The Aprilia SXR 160 gets a tall windscreen, the unusual large front apron and split LED headlamp design. From the side, it gets the typical maxi design, with a weird-looking smaller rear portion. Further, the scooter gets alloy wheels and LED tail lamps as well. It comes pretty well equipped too with a fully digital instrument cluster, full LED headlamps, a long seat for comfortable touring and 5-spoke 12-inch wheels.

Aprilia will be launching the SXR 160 in India in Q3 of 2020 at around the festive season. Bookings for the maxi scooter are expected to begin around August. We are expecting it to come at an asking price of around Rs 1.2 Lakhs (ex-showroom). That’s a Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 premium over the BS6 SR 160.

Well, this might be relatively unheard of. Just like the Forza 300, the X-Town 300i is a full-size maxi-scooter. To give you a brief background, Kymco is a Taiwanese scooter-maker who has partnered with Indian startup 22Motors. They will be selling their scooters in India under the brand name of 22Kymco. The first among them will be the X-Town 300i.

The 22Kymco X-Town 300i is also a typical maxi-scooter in terms of styling with a large front fascia – replete with a large headlamp and tall windscreen – but with relatively simpler bodywork when compared to the Forza 300. It will be powered by a 276cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected motor delivering  24.5PS of power and 25Nm. Its pretty well equipped too with large tyres, disc brakes all around and dual-channel ABS as standard and plenty of storage places as well.

The 22Kymco X-Town 300i costs Rs 2.3 lakh (on-road Delhi). That’s quite an attractive pricing for a 300cc maxi-scooter. It comes to India via the CKD route but while the company has disclosed the pricing of the X-Town 300i, it will still take some time to reach customers as deliveries are slated for September this year.
