The 2020 Honda Africa Twin has been launched in India for a starting price of Rs 15.35 lakh. The bike comes to India only in the higher-spec Adventure Sports variant.
Honda has launched the 2020 Africa Twin in India for a starting price of Rs 15.35 lakhs for the base manual variant and Rs 16.10 lakh for the DCT variant. This is the first time Honda has launched the Africa Twin in India with a manual gearbox. Honda has brought only the higher-spec Adventure Sports variant of the Africa Twin here in India. Internationally, the bike is available in a standard guise and the higher-spec Adventure Sports guise. Bookings for the motorcycle open today at Honda Bigwing dealerships.
The 2020 Honda Africa Twin is powered by a 1084cc, parallel-twin, liquid-cooled engine. Yes, the displacement has gone up by 86cc. The engine now produces peak output figures of 102hp at 7,500rpm and 105Nm at 6,250rpm. Even that is a notable bump from the 89hp at 7,500rpm and 93Nm at 6,000rpm over the older motorcycle. For the first time in India, the bike will be available with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).
There are some changes to the chassis as well. The new frame has been updated for “optimised handling characteristics”. The rear subframe is now made of aluminum and is detachable. The swingarm is new as well and Honda claims its lighter and more rigid than before. The new motorcycle is also lighter than before across the entire range. The new Adventure Sport model weighs 243kg (shedding 5kgs over its predecessor), which is still higher than the competition, but it’s worth bearing in mind that the Adventure Sports gets a large 24.2-litre fuel tank.

On the electronics front, the 2020 Honda Africa Twin gets a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU), wheelie control, cornering ABS, rear-lift control, DCT cornering detection and cornering lights. There’s a new 6.5-inch TFT display that’s even compatible with Apple CarPlay and for the first time, the motorcycle also gets cruise control as standard. The Adventure Sports model offers some additional features like Showa Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment (EERA) suspension, tubeless wheels, heated grips, charging socket, a larger skid plate, an aluminium rear rack and a larger fuel tank.

In India, the Honda Africa Twin will compete against the likes of the upcoming Triumph Tiger 900 and the BMW F 850 GS. The latter is priced from Rs 12.95 lakh and goes up to Rs 15.4 lakh for the top F 850 GS Adventure in our market. For reference, the previous gen Africa Twin DCT was priced at 13.5 lakh, but this was a lower-spec model with much less kit compared with the bike that has just been launched.
