Volkswagen is launching the T-Roc in India on 18th March. The compact SUV was unveiled just before the Auto Expo 2020.
Volkswagen is marching in with its SUV fleet this year. This week, it is launching the Tiguan All-Space followed by the T-Roc later this month. Next year, it will bring in a sub-compact SUV and the recently unveiled Taigun compact SUV too.
Talking specifically about the Volkswagen T-Roc, it is a 4.2 metre long SUV. It will use a 1.5 Litre four-cylinder TSI petrol engine and no diesel motor. The engine pumps out 150 PS and 250 Nm of peak torque, mated to a 7-speed DSG as standard. The top speed achievable is 205 km/hr.
Going by the dimensions, T-Roc will be a prime and a tough competitor to the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks and Renault Captur. However, it won’t. For the Creta league, Volkswagen is developing the Taigun SUV. So, what about the T-Roc?

Volkswagen will sell the T-Roc in India through the CBU route. That means it will be a fully imported car attracting heavy custom duties. By the rules of government, a manufacturer can only import up to 2,500 units in a year. So, that’s the figure that VW has kept for this year.
Since its a CBU, the prices will be comparatively higher. So, the T-Roc is actually going to come at a price of around Rs 20 Lakhs (ex-showroom). That puts it in a segment above the Creta, rivalling the likes of MG Hector, Hyundai Tucson, Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV500 and Jeep Compass.
If noted, the engine specifications denote power figures similar to what we get on the likes of Hector and Tucson. VW will launch the T-Roc to see the response from Indian buyers. Possibly, if it turns out to be good, we can expect the company to start its local manufacturing.
T-Roc will get many upmarket features like LED headlamps, LED DRLs, Vienna Leather Seats, Digital Cockpit with an 11.7inch digital cluster, cruise control, Panoramic Sunroof and a large touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Mirror Link.
Safety features onboard will include six airbags, rear parking sensors, rear parking camera, electronic stabilisation programme (ESP), Electronic Differential Lock, Anti-Slip Regulation, Hill Assist Control and its Euro-NCAP 5 star safety rating.
