Next-Gen Mahindra Scorpio Still a Year Away Along with XUV500

Mahindra has recently confirmed that the next-gen Scorpio will be launched in the second-quarter of 2021. Prior to that, the next-gen XUV500 will be launched in early-2021.

We have already told you that Mahindra has been developing the next-gen Scorpio for some time. It was previously expected that the new Scorpio would hit the roads this year itself. However, Dr Pawan Goenka, CEO & MD, Mahindra & Mahindra recently confirmed that the next-gen Scorpio (internally known as Z101) will see a launch sometime in the second quarter of 2021. That means the new Scorpio will not be out before April-June, next year.

The new Mahindra Scorpio will be underpinned by a freshly updated ladder-frame chassis for the first time. This chassis will also be underpinning the next-gen Mahindra Thar as well. Additionally, the next-gen Scorpio will get new body panels and the design will sport the upright silhouette that has defined the SUV since it was first launched in 2002.

From the spy images of the new Scorpio that we have seen as of yet, the SUV will feature strong character lines along its sides including a pronounced kink on the rear door pushing upwards along with the window line. We have seen this design feature on other newer Mahindra models like the XUV300 and it is also expected to be seen on the upcoming next-gen XUV500. At the rear, the SUV is expected to continue with side hinged doors and vertically placed tail-lamps.

On the inside, the next-gen Scorpio will have a fresh dashboard design which will be dominated by a large touchscreen infotainment system. In fact, the new Scorpio is expected to share a lot of its switchgear with the Marazzo, like the steering wheel, gear knob, control stalks and even the instrument cluster to keep costs in check. The interior and exterior design of the next-gen Scorpio has been conceptualised and shaped at Mahindra’s North American Technical Centre in Detroit, United States, and has been engineered and developed at the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai.

Under the hood, the new Scorpio will feature a 2.2-litre diesel engine with 140 bhp and also a new petrol engine for the first time. Mahindra’s new G20 2.0-litre petrol engine is expected to make around 190hp and 380Nm. This will make the Scorpio much powerful than it has ever been. The new Scorpio is one from the several new launches planned by Mahindra in the next 24 months. The other models include the next-gen XUV500 and the all-new Thar.
