BS6 Hyundai Elantra Diesel is Less Powerful Than BS4-Spec Model

The BS6 Hyundai Elantra will be powered by a 1.5L diesel engine with 115bhp and will be offered in two variants – SX with 6-speed MT only and SX(O) with 6-speed AT only.

Hyundai has now listed the BS6 diesel Elantra on their website. As we had already reported earlier, the BS6 Elantra will get a new diesel engine that’s in use on the Creta and the Seltos. The 1.5L diesel engine produces 115bhp and 250Nm of peak torque. The engine will either come mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The BS6 Hyundai Elantra diesel will be launched sometime later in the year when situations have normalized after the coronavirus pandemic.

Hyundai has officially revealed the specifications and details of the BS6 Elantra diesel.

Going further, the diesel variants of the Elantra will just be available in two trims – SX and SX(O). The SX variant will be available only with the 6-speed manual gearbox while the SX(O) variant will only be offered with the 6-speed automatic gearbox. Interestingly, Hyundai will also be dropping the base S variant from the Elantra line-up, with the executive sedan being offered in just two variants overall.

Earlier, the Elantra came with a 1.6-litre diesel engine which produced 128 BHP and 260 Nm of peak torque. The new engine is comparatively less powerful thus. This engine will in fact also come on the new Verna. A slightly detuned version of this very same engine also comes on Venue and will further come on the new generation i20. As it turns out, this sole 1.5L diesel engine will be powering almost the entire Hyundai lineup in India, except for the Tuscon.

On the features front, the diesel variants of the Elantra will be equipped a par with the petrol variants. Even the now base SX trim will be pretty well kitted out with features like six airbags, rear-view camera, auto headlamps, sunroof, dual-zone climate control, 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Blue Link connected car tech, cruise control and more.

The top-end SX(O) variant will come with additional features such as powered driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, LED headlamps, wireless phone charger, leatherette upholstery and front parking sensors. With the diesel Elantra, Hyundai has a competitive advantage over its rivals. The Elantra went against the likes of the Honda Civic, Skoda Octavia and the Toyota Corolla Altis. Toyota has already discontinued the Corolla Altis and the Honda Civic is now a petrol-only offering. Even when Skoda launches the new Octavia, it will be a petrol-only model. The Elantra is the sole diesel sedan in its segment and should enjoy great reception from the buyers.
