Up until this time, the S-Cross was solely offered with a 1.3L turbocharged diesel engine from Fiat. Incidentally, this engine also featured on the pre-facelift Vitara Brezza. But just like the Vitara Brezza has made its switch to a petrol engine in the BS6 era, the S-Cross has been meted out the same treatment as well. The petrol engine in question here is a BS6-compliant 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol unit.

The engine puts out 105hp and 138Nm of peak torque and its also featured under the hoods of the Ciaz, Ertiga and XL6. The engine will either come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox. Maruti Suzuki will however be offering their SHVS mild-hybrid technology only on the automatic variants of S-Cross. The outgoing S-cross diesel was available with this technology on all variants.

Other than the change of heart under the hood, the S-Cross remains otherwise unchanged from its diesel counterpart. The last time the S-Cross received an update was in 2017 with some refreshed styling and more equipment. The model is now approaching the end of its lifecycle. There are also talks that the S-Cross could be replaced by the production version of the Futuro-e concept SUV that was showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo.

With a switch to a petrol engine, the S-Cross will be cheaper than its diesel counterpart. The outgoing S-Cross diesel retailed in the country for a price of Rs 8.81 to 11.44 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The S-cross petrol will most likely be available in four trim levels – Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha. The automatic gearbox option will likely be offered on the higher three variants. The S-cross competes with the likes of the now petrol-only Renault Duster and Nissan Kicks, along with the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
