BMW has revealed images of the 5-Series facelift that comes with cosmetic exterior changes, more equipment on the inside and even a plug-in hybrid engine. It expected to come to India by 2021.
You might have not realized, but the current version of the BMW 5-Series that’s on sale in India has been around for almost three years now. Yet, it does not seem dated at all and in fact, looks young as ever. Well, BMW has already come up with a facelift for the 5-Series and the first images of the same have now surfaced on the internet. And we must admit we really like what we are looking at here. At least it has been spared from BMW’s ever growing kidney grille.
Well, actually the grille has grown when compared to the pre-facelift car but its nowhere as big as we have seen in the 7-Series or some of the SUVs from BMW. The grille is also connected now and the headlamps seems to be growing slimmer than ever. The LED DRLs have also been revised and they look a lot slimmer to the ones on the 7-Series. If you remember the BMWs from even five years ago, you would note that BMW’s once signature LED rings in their headlamp units have gradually been disappearing. The modern iterations have adopted a more L-shaped pattern.
The front bumpers in the 5-Series facelift have also been redesigned with more aggressively styled air dams and the bonnet has been beefed up with some muscular bulges to add some more character. In profile, the updated car remains mostly similar to the current 5-series expect for the new dual-tone alloy wheels. And quite fancy these new wheels are! At the rear, the updated sedan gets minor revisions to the tail lamps and a more sportier looking rear bumper with dual exhaust outlets.

BMW hasn’t revealed any images of the interiors of the 5-Series facelift. But we expect it to be largely similar to the current model, except for a slight revision in the trims and upholstery to uplift the ambience. The new car is also expected to feature connected car technology. The India-spec 5-series is expected to come with features such as digital driver’s instrument panel, ambient lighting, a Harman Kardon sound system, a sunroof, a heads-up display, and BMW’s i-Drive infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay. Expected safety features include 8 airbags, ABS with EBD, parking sensors, a rear view camera, as well as electronic stability control.

Before mentioning what could be under the hood, we would like to draw your attention to a charging port on the lft front fender of this 5-Series facelift. That inevitably means that BMW will be debuting a plug-in hybrid variant of the 5-Series with this facelift. As for the India-spec model, we expect the current crop of 190PS 2.0-litre diesel, 252PS 2.0-litre petrol, as well as the 265PS 3.0-litre diesel powertrain options to continue. Whether the plug-in hybrid variant makes it to India is something we have to wait and watch. We expect BMW to bring this 5-Series facelift to India in 2021 with a premium over the current pricing. It competes against the likes of the Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Jaguar XF, and Volvo S90.
