Mercedes Benz Gives The C-Class More Power With A New Petrol Engine

Mercedes has replaced the 1.5L turbo-petrol mild-hybrid engine in the C-Class with a more powerful 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine. Quite against the trend, we must say.

Mercedes Benz introduced a facelift for the C-Class sedan back in 2018 and along with some visual updates, the carmaker had also introduced a new 1.5L turbo-petrol engine with a 48V mil-hybrid system for the C200 variant. Mercedes Benz have now dropped the 1.5L turbo-petrol mild-hybrid engine from the C-Class and replaced it with a more powerful 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine.

That’s quite a surprise as Mercedes Benz have gone against the trend of downsizing and hydridization for a larger non-hybrid unit. The Mercedes Benz C200 continues to be offered in two trim levels – Prime and Progressive – with the new engine as well. Prices for the Mercedes C200 Prime now starts from Rs 40.90 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 46.54 lakh for the mid-spec Progressive variant. All prices are ex-showroom.

In its previous iteration, the C200 with the 1.5L turbo-petrol mild-hybrid engine produced 184bhp. The 48V mild-hybrid system gave an additional boost of 14bhp and 160Nm of torque. The new 2.0L turbo-petrol engine is more powerful than the outgoing unit as it produces 204bhp. The engine continues to be mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox. Mercedes claims an identical 7.7sec 0-100kph time for the updated C-class.

In terms of equipment, the C200 comes with standard features such as 64-colour ambient lighting, the COMAND infotainment system with a 10.25-inch display, satellite navigation, LED headlamps, a powered rear sunblind and powered front seats. The Progressive trim further adds more equipment like wireless phone charger, a digital instrument cluster, active parking assist, driver-seat memory and a Midline sound system.

Mercedes now also offers their embedded-SIM based Mercedes Me connected car technology across the C-Class range. The system offers a variety of location-based and remote vehicle monitoring functions. Currently, the C-Class only has the BMW 3-Series as its rival in the Indian market. Audi and Volvo are yet to re-enter this segment with the updated A4 and S60 later this year. Current versions of both these cars have been discontinued due to BS6 norms.
