The Mercedes S-Class is due a generation change while the E-Class will get a mid-life facelift, both of which will come to India next year.
While the Indian market cannot get enough with their obsession about SUVs, there are still some sedans in the luxury segment that make their presence felt. That includes the likes of the Mercedes Benz E-Class which is a best seller in the luxury mid-size sedan segment and also the S-Class which is still very regarded among the super rich. The S-Class is Mercedes’ true flagship and it has always been the embodiment of every quality the brand stands for. What we are trying to get to is that Mercedes Benz is going to bring a new facelift to the S-Class and E-Class in India in 2021.
In fact, the S-Class is due an entire generation change. The curren-gen S-Class (W222) has been on sale in India since 2014 but has been regular updated with facelifts. The new-gen S-Class (W223) will make its global debut in September this year and it can only be expected to arrive in India by the second quarter of next year. It might have arrived earlier but the ongoing COVID-19 crisis has delayed the process, like many other things.
Not much is known about the new S-Class as of yet but there have been several spy shots that have been doing rounds on the internet. It’s not expected to change much in terms of styling but there will be big changes on the interiors and under the hood. Some spy shits suggest that the new S-Class will have a waterfall-style screen on the dashboard with minimal use of buttons. Powertrain options will include a petrol, diesel, mild-hybrids and even plug-in hybrids. There are also rumors that there will only be long wheelbase model and Mercedes is most likely to discontinue the V12-engined S600 version along with the coupe and cabriolet versions.

As for the E-Class, Mercedes has already introduced a mid-life facelift for the current generation of the E-Class in the international market. However, even that will take some time to make it to India, only by next year. The current-gen E-Class has been on sale in India since 2017 and it has been a benchmark in its segment. However, India is the only market to get a right-hand drive long wheelbase model and so it takes considerable time to get the components and supply chain sorted.

With the E-Class, we generally run a year later as compared to the model’s global lifecycle. The E-Class facelift boasts of some cosmetic changes both on the inside and the outside and the international markets also get a variety of powertrain options including mild-hybrids and plug-in hybrids. It remains to be seen if Mercedes brings these powertrains to India but we will surely see a premium in price of the E-Class which currently retails from Rs 59.07-75.29 lakh (ex-showroom).
