MG Hector Diesel Automatic Coming Soon to Rival Tata Harrier Automatic

MG Motors have confirmed that they will soon be launching the Hector diesel with a new DCT automatic gearbox. It can now take the challenge to the Tata Harrier diesel-AT.

MG Motors just announced the prices for the BS6 Hector diesel and now, the company has announced that they will soon be launching an automatic gearbox option with the diesel version of the Hector as well. The automatic gearbox in question will be DCT (dual-clutch transmission) unit, just like MG offers a 6-speed DCT gearbox with the top two trims of the petrol Hector.

However, the company hasn’t yet announced the number of gears that would be on offer with the new Hector diesel automatic. What is also unknown is the exact timeline when the diesel automatic variant of the Hector would be launched due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Other than the addition of a new automatic gearbox, we do not expect any other change on the already feature-rich SUV.

We expect the Hector diesel DCT-automatic to cost about Rs 1 lakh more than the BS6 Hector diesel prices – which now ranges from Rs 13.88 – 17.22 lakh, ex-showroom. Just like the petrol automatic variants, we expect MG Motors will offer the automatic gearbox only in the top two trims of the Hector diesel. Hence, ex-showroom prices for the Hector diesel-AT can be estimated to be about Rs 17.5-19 lakh.

The Hector was the only SUV in its segment which did not have the option of an automatic gearbox till now. All its rivals including the Tata Harrier, the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos have diesel-AT variants in their lineup. More importantly, the MG Hector can finally take its game against the Tata Harrier, its arch rival in the Indian market. The Tata Harrier Diesel-At is priced between Rs 16.25-20.25 lakh while the diesel-AT variants of the Creta and the Seltos are priced between Rs 13.54-17.34 lakh and Rs 15.99-17.20 lakh, respectively.

The BS6 Hector diesel was just launched yesterday. The SUV continues to be powered by a Fiat sourced 2.0L diesel engine that puts out 170bhp and 350Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated only to a 6-speed manual transmission. In fact, this is the same engine that’s offered on the new Tata Harrier and in the exact same spec as well.
