Next-Gen Ford Mustang is Going Hybrid and That’s Very Exciting. Here’s Why!

The Ford Mustang is due a generation change in 2022 and the next-gen model will be powered by a hybrid V8 engine with four-wheel drive. Quite some exciting times lie ahead of us.

Ford had sometime ago announced its plans of having as many as 18 mild-hybrid or fully-hybrid models by 2022. While a lot of models in Ford’s lineup would make sense as hybrids, the fate of the growling Ford Mustangs is no different. Ford’s attempt in going green will also inevitably hybridize the Mustang sports coupe. The Ford Mustang is due a generation change in 2022 and the next-gen pony cars will have hybrid V8 powertrain and four-wheel drive.

The idea of a hybrid Mustang isn’t all that bad and if the combustion-engined sportscar has to survive, it really has to be a hybrid as that is the inevitable way forward. The best hypercars from the last decade – the holy trinity – were all hybrids and the world loved them. You sure can be expecting a lot from a hybrid Mustang as well. In fact, Ford has had plans for the same since 2017 and were actually planning to bring a hybrid Mustang to the market by 2020.

However, with the carmaker shifting focus to the Mustang-inspired Mach-E electric SUV, the plan eventually got shelved. having achieved that now, Ford is now back on track with the original pony car. With the next-gen car, Ford will stick to its V8 engine powering the rear wheels and there will be two electric motors on the front axle. This will effectively give the car four-wheel drive and also possibly torque vectoring. The electric motors will assist in improving fuel efficiency in normal driving conditions and add performance when used on the track.

The new Mustang will be based on Ford’s CD6 platform which means its likely to retain its four-seater configuration. However, unlike the Mach-E that’s clearly more focused towards technology and gadgetry, we hope that the new Mustang is more driver oriented and with less attention on infotainment features and toned-down driver assistance. What we are really excited to see is how the new-gen pony car turns out in terms of design as that has been an iconic feature of the Mustang ever since its inception.

We are definitely very excited about the hybrid Mustang and ever since the Mustang became available globally in 2015 outside of the United States, it has really gained a fan following. In India, Ford currently sells the S-550 generation of the Mustang for a price of Rs 74.61 lakh. Since the globally-sold Mustang will be available in right-hand drive, we could see the S650 Mustang on our shores in the coming years.
