The Tata Hexa still hasn’t received its BS6 update and even with heavy discounts of Rs 2.25 lakh, customers are increasingly reluctant to buy BS4 vehicles.
Tata has updated their entire product portfolio to comply with the BS6 emission norms but the only car that has been left out of the mix is the Hexa SUV. Customers have been increasingly reluctant to buy BS4 vehicles and Tata did not sell a single unit of the Hexa in March. In fact, Tata was compelled to suspend production of the Hexa last month, with not a single unit produced either.
However, Tata have fortunately been able to almost exhaust their BS4 stocks at their dealerships. This was achieved by balancing the production side and giving out huge discounts to clear out the remaining BS4 stocks. The Tata Hexa was available at a discount of Rs 2.25 lakh last month. In comparison, a lot of other manufacturers are still left with significant BS4 stocks and even the Supreme Court’s 10-day extension period wouldn’t exhaust the stocks completely.
It was previously though that the upcoming Tata Gravitas would be replacing the ageing Hexa in our market as the company’s seven-seater SUV. However, Tata surprised everyone with a Tata Hexa Safari Edition at the 2020 Auto Expo and said that a BS6 powertrain in the Hexa would be introduced in the next financial year. While it could have happened this April, it now stands uncertain as when we will see the BS6 Hexa due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The Tata Hexa came powered by two diesel engines under its hood – Varicor 320 and Varicor 400 – The former produced 148 hp and 320Nm of torque and came mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The latter produced 154 hp and 400Nm of torque, being mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Hexa was known for its solid build quality and also its mild off-road capability. It was also a pretty reliable SUV and had lots of the space on the inside.

Sales in the automotive industry anyway have been down due to the coronavirus crisis. Tata Motors sold only 5,676 cars in March 2020, thus recording a decline of 68.13% in year-on-year sales. Tata Motors stood in fifth position in the list of top carmakers in March 2020. The month of April will be worse for manufacturers with the lockdown already having eaten up half the month. It will still be some time before customers again get back to the buying sentiment.
