SIAM has released the sales data for FY2020 and based on that, we have compiled a list of India’s best selling motorcycles in the range of Rs 2-3 lakh.

The Indian motorcycle market has really evolved over the last couple of years and we are gradually seeing the market move towards the premium segment of motorcycles. Particularly, motorcycles in the range of Rs 2-3 lakh in India have seen a great boom in the last couple of years. Last week, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) released sales numbers for FY2020 (April 2019-March 2020). While overall sales across segments has definitely dropped over the years, some models have actually shown a growth in numbers from FY2019. Here we have compiled of list of the best selling motorcycles in India in between the Rs 2-3 lakh range.

This isn’t really a surprise as Royal Enfield dropped a bomb with the new 650 twins. RE has sold as many as 20,188 units of the 650 twins in FY2020 and it is certainly the best selling motorcycle in between the Rs 2-3 lakh range. Prices for the Royal Enfield 650 twins start from Rs 2.64 lakh. In FY2019, RE sold 5,168 units of these 650 twins and that’s a massive increase of 291% in sales over just one year. Royal Enfield has also exported 19,597 units of the 650 twins (nearly the same as domestic sales) in FY2020, making them the manufacturer’s most popular exports.

KTM’s popularity is on an ever increasing rise and its not really a surprise that their motorcycles will be one of the best selling ones in this price range. The Duke is one of the most popular naked motorcycles in the country right now across its various displacements and it is the Duke 250 that has come out on top of the sales chart. Priced at Rs 2 lakh (ex-showroom), KTM has sold 6,709 units of the Duke 250 in FY2020. Compared to FY2019 where KTM sold 6,019 units of the Duke 250, they have recorded a growth of 11.5%.

KTM Duke 390, RC 390 and Adventure 390

Closely following the Duke 250 is again KTM's 390 series among the best selling motorcycles in the Rs 2-3 lakh range
Closely following the Duke 250 is again KTM’s 390 series among the best selling motorcycles in the Rs 2-3 lakh range

Following the Duke 250, the 390 series in not far behind the Duke 250. In fact, the 390 series is the only segment from KTM that has a motorcycle of all genres – a street naked, a sportsbike and also an adventure tourer. Prices for the 390 range starts from Rs 2.48 lakh, and although KTM hasn’t revealed the individual sales figure of these motorcycles, the combined sales unit for the 390 platform stands at 5,962 units. While most of KTM’s range saw a drop in numbers, sales for the 390 range actually went up by a small amount, most likely due to the new 390 Adventure.  In FY2020, KTM’s 390 platform’s sales grew by 1.2 percent, from the 5,891 units sold in FY2019.

Although the Royal Enfield Classic 500 has now been discontinued, it was one of the best selling motorcycles in this segment in FY2020

Royal Enfield has now discontinued the 500cc platform – which included the Classic 350 and the Thunderbird 350 – with the coming of the BS6 norms. The Classic 500 was one of their most popular products and its really unfortunate that it has now been discontinued. However, before it was taken down, it was one of the best selling motorcycles above Rs 2 lakh and has thus earned a spot in this list. RE sold 4,925 units of the Classic 500 in FY2020 and that’s still a massive 74.4% drop in sales from the 19,282 units sold in FY2019.

TVS Apache RR 310

Wrapping up this list is the TVS Apache RR 310.
Wrapping up this list is the TVS Apache RR 310.

The TVS Apache RR 310 is an excellent motorcycle for its price and once of the best in this fully-faired sportsbike segment. Priced at Rs 2.40 lakh, TVS has sold 2,299 units of the Apache RR 310 is FY2020 and earns the final spot in our list. Its a direct rival to the KTM RC 390 and if individual sales numbers are to be considered, the TVS has certainly done better. It however did record a massive drop in sales from FY2019 where it sold almost double with 4.525 units. TVS has gives a significant upgrade to the motorcycle with its BS6 compliance and we hope that again helps boost the sales of the motorcycle next year.
