Volkswagen Ameo Discontinued – Why Will It Still Be A Good Used Car?

Volkswagen has discontinued Ameo in India due to the BS6 norms. Here are five highlights of the sedan that still make it a good second-hand car.

With the launch of second-generation Dzire and Amaze, the sub-compact sedan segment took a sudden liking. Then Hyundai launched Xcent and then also came Tata Tigor. Volkswagen bought in the Ameo which was the only one of them focused on driving.

Launched back in 2016, it was never a good run for Ameo. In its initial years, it clocked in decent sales figures but from 2019, it went gradually down. The sales went down to as low as 300-400 units a month. So, VW decided to cut off Ameo from its future cars.

Despite all this, Ameo was a very good car. It was known for great handling, a powerful diesel engine and the DSG gearbox. There was the high maintenance cost of a VW car but on the contrary, VW cars are said to be very long lasting.

Ameo was available with two engines, a 1.0 Litre three-cylinder MPI petrol and a 1.5 Litre TDI diesel engine. The petrol engine produced 76 PS and 95 Nm of peak torque whereas the diesel unit let out 110 PS and 250 Nm of peak torque. The petrol and diesel engines came with a 5-speed MT as standard while the latter also got the option of a 7-speed DSG.

Volkswagen Ameo was the first ever compact sedan to offer rain sensing wipers, automatic headlamps, cruise control and ambient lighting. Other features include electronic power steering, Opening and closing of windows with key remote, height-adjustable driver seat, electric ORVMs, Auto AC, Rear AC vents, touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Cooled Glove Box.

Safety features include ABS with EBD, dual-front airbags, rear parking sensors and the speed-alert system as standard fitment. The top-end Highline Plus variant comes with Rear Parking Camera, Auto-Dimming Rear-View Mirror, Cornering Lights, ESP and Hill Hold Control (DSG).

If you still want to buy one, a couple of local dealerships might have it. There is a minute chance of getting one but if you can, you might only get the diesel one. VW has done a lot of changes to its lineup to adhere to the BS6 norms. Even Polo and Vento have lost their two big highlights – 1.5 Litre diesel engine and the DSG gearbox.
