Nissan has now discontinued the Terrano from the Indian market due to poor sales as it will not be updated to meet the BS6 norms. It will however soon be replaced by a new sub-4m SUV that will likely be called the Magnite.
Nissan has now discontinued the Terrano in India and its unlikely that the SUV will see any replacements coming in the future. Yes, this SUV does not pop up on the roads quite so often and you’d barely find anyone talking about it. Nissan however had high hopes from the Terrano when it was launched back in 2013. It was based on the Renault Duster, a very popular SUV then and still is, but it never did quite as well as the SUV it was based on. Stepping into the BS6 era, Nissan decided it was the right time to pull out the SUV of the market.
Although based on the Duster, the Terrano looks completely different and was designed around Nissan’s own design language. Which one looks better is perhaps debatable but they were mostly similar under the skin. However, Renault kept updating the Duster all along its lifetime and that is why it still hasn’t fallen out of trend even in these modern times. Nissan had just updated the Terrano once in 2017 with a mid-life facelift and although that brought a lot of fresh appeal to the SUV, it still didn’t see any success.
A few years further and we had a fresh crop of SUVs with the sub-4m compact SUV segment. The likes of the Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300 and Tata Nexon were much ahead in their appeal and it was only natural for the Terrano to further lose its audience to this emerging segment of SUVs. The poor sales of the Terrano did not make a good enough business case for Nissan to upgrade the SUV to the BS6 norms and it would have required substantial investment but there would have been no returns.

The Nissan Terrano had two engine options in India – a 1.5 liter petrol and a 1.5 liter diesel engine. The petrol engine produces 104hp and 148Nm of torque while the diesel engine was available in two states of tune – 85hp/200Nm and 110hp/245Nm. There were even three different transmission options for each of these three engines. The petrol engine was mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 85hp diesel engine had a 5-speed AMT gearbox while the 110hp diesel engine came mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

With the Terrano now axed from Nissan India’s lineup, it will soon be replaced by a new sub-4m SUV which we are guessing will be called the Magnite. It is meant to rival the likes of the Hyundai Venue, the Mahindra XUV300 and the Tata Nexon and it is supposed to debut this year itself. However, we are unsure of a timeline for the launch because of the coronavirus crisis.
