Porsche has debuted the 992 generation 911 Targa internationally and the design is as beautiful as it was fifty years ago. Its powered by the same 3.0-litre flat six engine like the other 911s of this generation.
Ever since Porsche rolled out the 992 generation of the 911s, the German sports car manufacturer has been brisk to introduce more and more classic iterations of the 911 range. The latest from Stuttgart is the new 992 generation Porsche 911 Targa. The Targa roof design is a five-decade old tradition of the 911 range and latest iteration is now in its eight generation. But first, take a moment to appreciate the design of this beautiful automotive masterpiece that has aged so beautifully over the years.
The new generation 911 Targa takes off exactly where the last generation left. The central roll-over bar is a classic piece of design and the fully automated system takes just 19 seconds to stow away the hardtop roof panel behind the rear seats. The entire rear deck and screen lifts up to store the roof section in the space, with the central roll-over bar being in its place all the time. That aside, the 911 Targa looks mostly similar to other 911s of the 922 generation including the integrated LED rear light bar and variably extending rear spoiler.
The Targa folding roof mechanism is however quite complex and coupled with the four-wheel drive system, the Targa is the heaviest 911 of the 992 generation. In the 4S manual form, the car has a kerb weight of 1640 kg which makes it 60 kg heavier than the equivalent 991 generation 911 Targa. It is also 5 kg heavier than the equivalent 992 generation Cabriolet. The heart of the Targa is the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre flat six engine like the other 911s of this generation.

The base 911 Targa 4 has been tuned to produce 385hp and 450Nm of peak torque. If you fit your car with the optional sport-chrono package, 0-100kph comes up in just 4.2 seconds and the top-speed stands at 290 kph. The Targa is also available as a 4S model in which the engine has been tuned to produce 450hp and 530Nm of peak torque. 0-100kph in this case comes up in just 3.6 seconds and with the top-speed being rated at 304kph. Both the models come equipped with an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox as standard.

However, you can also opt for a 7-speed manual gearbox in combination with the Sport Chrono package as a no-cost optional extra. Porsche also offers PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) as standard on the Targe which essentially brings in adaptive dampers and Torque Vectoring Plus. Other notable optional extras include ceramic-composite brakes and a ‘Smartlift’ function which lifts the nose of the car to clear obstacles. Porsche hasn’t said anything about the launch of the Targa in India yet. However, the carmaker very recently announced the prices for the 911 Turbo S in India. The launch and deliveries are scheduled towards the end of the year.
