Some latest reports suggest that Fiat is already working on the next-gen Punto which will likely be a product of the merger between Group PSA and FCA. Whether it will come to India, we are not sure.
The Fiat Punto was a very loved hatchback in India as well as in international markets. It had great performance in its segment and its design was also very lovable and unique. Fiat however chose to discontinue the Punto in the international markets in 2018. It ran a little longer here in India until it was discontinued very recently as we stepped into the BS6 era. However, there are now reports which claim that the Fiat Punto name could be revived again.
In a report, Fiat Automobiles’ chief executive Olivier François said, “It’s not a mystery. That project has been postponed continuously. Now it is under development. But it would be premature to speak of this model. We will have a B-sector[premium hatchback], for sure.” That’s certainly great news and next-generation of the Punto will then be more premium that it has been all these years.
We believe that the next-gen Fiat Punto could be a product of the upcoming merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and Peugeot SA (PSA). This deal between FCA and PSA is set to finalized within 2020 itself. The next-gen Punto could be based on PSA Group’s CMP (Common Modular Platform) which is the smallest modular platform in the group’s lineup. The same platform also underpins the new-gen Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa.

However, Fiat’s Boss has not yet confirmed about the name, so you could be seeing a brand new name altogether. It will however be more advisable if the company choses to capitalize on the popularity of the Punto name. There are however very bleak chances of the Punto ever making it back to India. It is also not completely impossible because here’s an interesting proposition about the same.

Group PSA will soon be launching the Citroen brand in India with the C5 Aircross. The C5 Aircross is also incidentally expected to be based on the CMP platform in India. As for FCA, they also haven’t completely wrapped up their operations in India as the Jeep brand is very well alive. We would like to believe that these favorable conditions will spell a return for the Punto in India. And why not, it still fondly remembered in the hearts of enthusiasts.
