The Nissan 370Z Will Finally Have a Successor – The Nissan 400Z

Nissan has dropped a teaser of a new sportscar which is supposedly a successor to the Nissan 370Z. The design of the 400Z seems to be inspired by the 240Z from the 70s and it holds promise to be a formidable sports car.

The Nissan 370Z was one of the most formidable sports cars in its segment. Being much cheaper than the Porsche Boxsters and Caymans, the 370Z was not very far behind in terms of fun factor. Back in the day, Nissan had several revered Zed sportscars like the 240Z, the 350Z and others like the 300ZX and Silvia as well. These cars have long been discontinued but the 370Z and the GT-R continue to be on sale. However, they too have begun showing their age and now, Nissan has teased us with a brand new successor to the 370Z. Its called the Nissan 400Z.

This comes quite as a surprise as the company hasn’t spoken about the 370Z for ages but they have been secretly developing its successor. The teaser comes in the form of a video which also teases several other upcoming Nissan cars. But a new sportscar in the lineup was sure to catch everyone’s eyes. The teaser only shows us the silhouette of the new car and it immediately reminds us of the legendary 240Z. The design is strikingly reminiscent of glorious cars from Nissan’s yester years.

You can note the similarities with the 240Z with the long bonnet flowing into a small passenger compartment. The rear end is then quite short and stubby, just like the 240Z. There are actually reports which claim that the design of the 400Z has been inspired by the 240Z. Its also very beautiful to see how such an old design language has been adapted to modern times. The steeply sloping roofline with a muscular hip and a well contoured bonnet line are properly modern. There are also reports that suggest that the rear end of the car has been inspired by the Nissan 300ZX.

Under the hood, we expect Nissan will plonk the 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine from the Infiniti Q60. The engine develops 400PS of power and 475Nm of peak torque in the Inifiniti Q60 and it comes mated to a 7-speed automatic gearbox. There are however reports of a 6-speed manual gearbox for the 400Z. It does not get better than this. No wait, it does. There are even rumors of Nissan’s performance division – Nismo – to be working on a special edition model of the 400Z which will have around 480PS of power.

The Nissan 400Z will be pitted against the likes of the BMW M2 Competition, the Porsche Cayman, the Alpine A110 and the Toyota Supra. All these cars are sensational sports cars in their own regard and so the Nissan 400Z will have quite a lot to prove against these heavy weights. But Nissan isn’t completely oblivious to making great sportscars and there’s a lot to look forward to. Nissan is expected to globally debut the 400Z somtime in 2021 with global sales commencing for the car sometime in 2022.
