Nissan has now officially discontinued the Micra Active, Micra and Sunny going ahead in the BS6 era after the Terrano that was discontinued earlier this month. All cars were discontinued due to poor sales.
Nissan discontinued the Terrano in India earlier this month and now, they have officially discontinued three more cars from the Indian market in the BS6 era. That includes the Nissan Micra, the Micra Active and the Sunny. These cars were starting to show their age in their later years and with dwindling sales numbers, there was not much cause for Nissan to update these cars to the stricter BS6 emission norms.
The Nissan Micra was a hugely popular car when it was first introduced. With compact dimensions, it was a perfect city runabout and it looked quite good as well. However, Nissan failed to update the product over the years and it naturally feel out of fashion. Nissan’s lineup in India started with the Nissan Micra Active. It was powered by a 1.2L petrol engine that produced 68hp and 104Nm of torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox was the sole transmission on offer.
Interestingly, this same powertrain also does duty on the Datsun Go and Go+. The powertrain has been updated to the BS6 norms for the Datsun cars but Nissan decided not to offer in the Micra Active. The car has thus been discontinued. After the Micra Active, Nissan had the Micra which was introduced as a facelift for the former and was more modern. This more modern Micra was powered by the same engine from the Active but it upgraded to develop more power at 77hp. It was also offered with a 1.5L K9K diesel engine from Renault that produced 64hp and 160Nm of torque.
Now Renault has already pulled the plug on their diesel engines in India. So the Micra diesel naturally saw its demise but Nissan did not update the petrol engine to BS6 norms either and even the premium Micra was thus discontinued from the Indian market. Lastly, we come to the Nissan Sunny. The Sunny was again a hugely popular car and was particularly known for its enormous interior space. The Sunny had two powertrain options in India – a 1.5L petrol and a 1.5L diesel engine. The petrol engine again was offered in two states of tune.

The manual version of this petrol engine produced 99hp of power but Nissan also offered a CVT gearbox option with which, the engine produced 101hp. The 1.5L diesel engine produced 86hp and 200Nm of peak torque. The Sunny however lost its appeal with age and with not enough demand for the car, Nissan pulled the plug on this sedan. With the discontinuation of these three cars, Nissan has done away with their ageing products in India.

Its also highly unlikely that these cars will ever make a comeback because the Micra and the Sunny sold internationally are based on a brand new platform and it could be quite expensive to manufacture them in India. Currently, Nissan only has the Kicks and the GT-R Sportscar on sale in India in the BS6 era. Nissan is however looking at updating their lineup all over again. The Kicks will soon get a new 1.3L turbo-petrol engine from the Duster and Nissan is also working on a new sub-compact SUV, particularly for the Indian market.
