All Your Vehicular Documents Validity Extended Up To September 30!

The Government has yet again extended the validity of all vehicular documents including your fitness certificates, driving licenses, registration certificates to September 30 in the wake of the COVID-19 situation.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had previously extended the validity of all vehicular documents till July 31st, but in a latest development, the Ministry has now announced that all motor vehicle documents will now remain valid til September 30, 2020. This includes your pollution fitness certificates, your driving license, permits (all types) and also your registration certificates. This validation period has been extended for all documents that have expired on or after February 1, 2020.

This order has been passed in order to facilitate people who have not been able to renew their vehicular documents due to the lockdown issued in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Previously, on March 30, the Ministry had announced that the validity of all vehicular documents had been extended to May 31st. Towards the end of May, the Ministry again extended the validity to June 30 and then yet again to July 31, following the extension of the lockdown.

Considering the fact that the country is still coming to grasp with the COVID-19 situation and that there are several restrictions still in place in several parts of the country, the Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari thus issued an advice to his Ministry to extend the validity period of all vehicular documents further till the end of September. Hopefully, the situation will be much more under control by then.

Furthermore, the ministry has also issued a gazette notification on May 21, 2020, relaxing the fee on renewals and /or additional fee under Rule 32 or Rule 81 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, till July 31, 2020. The Ministry has also requested the State/UT Governments to consider offering relaxation in requirement of a permit, or fees or taxes for renewal/penalty for permits and more to provide relief during these extraordinary circumstances of COVID-19.

Currently, India is in what we are calling ‘Unlock 1.0’. Several relaxations have been allowed in several places regarding vehicular movement as we entered this phase. For example, public transportation has been re-started in most parts of the country and inter-city and inter-state travel is also now permissible without the need for passes. Private vehicles have also been allowed to ply freely. We are still however far from normalcy and safety still remains a priority in all that we do.
