What turns out to be a continued effect from this year, the coronavirus pandemic has caused the cancellation of the Geneva International Motor Show even in 2021. Future of several other motor shows are also under threat!
The coronavirus pandemic already caused the 2020 iteration of the Geneva Motor Show to be cancelled and going ahead in 2021, we will not have the Geneva Motor Show next year either. The Geneva International Motor Show is undoubtedly the most important motor show of them all and certainly one of the biggest in the motoring calendar. However, the organizers of the event cancelled the next year’s edition as well, stating that a bulk of the exhibitors have said that they will not be able to attend the event next year either.
The cancellation of the Geneva Motor Show this year at the last minute left the organizers facing a major financial shortfall. The Foundation of the Geneva International Motor Show (FGIMS) had even been in talks with the State of Geneva for a loan to secure its future. The FGIMS had been considering future plans about the Geneva Motor Show but after surveying the exhibitors, they decided to drop the event altogether for next year.
In a statement FGIMS said: “A majority of GIMS exhibitors who took part in a survey stated that they would probably not participate in a 2021 edition and that they would prefer to have a GIMS in 2022. The automotive sector is currently going through a difficult phase, and exhibitors need time to recover from the effects of the pandemic. Furthermore, it is far from certain that the current health situation would permit the organisation of an event attracting more than 6,00,000 visitors and 10,000 journalists next spring.”

The FGIMS has also said that they would now refuse the 16.8 million Swiss franc (approx. Rs 133.3 crore) loan that was granted by the State of Geneva as it was dependent on the event being organized in 2021. However, in order to secure the long term future of the motor show, FGIMS has even decided to sell the motor show to Palexpo SA, the company that runs the Geneva exhibition centre it is held in.

GIMS is not the only motor show to have suffered because of coronavirus, but several other important motor shows including Paris, New York and Detroit have all been cancelled this year. Beijing’s motor show has been delayed from April until September. The Paris motor show organizers have already indicated that the event will not run in its traditional form anymore and there are also several questions about the future of the next biggest motor show on motoring calendar – the Frankfurt Motor Show. The Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany is a biennial event which rotates with the Paris Motor Show will also be changing its long-term home from Frankfurt to Munich next year.
