Mahindra recently launched the BS6 complaint version of the Scorpio but its already common knowledge that the company is working a next-generation of this very popular SUV. The next-gen Mahindra Scorpio has been caught on test again and there’s some fresh spy shots of the same doing rounds on the internet. The next-gen Scorpio is still however some time away and will make its market debut only in 2021. But till then, here’s all that we know about the new Scorpio and all that you could expect from it.

The new Mahindra Scorpio will be underpinned by a freshly updated ladder-frame chassis for the first time. This chassis will also be underpinning the next-gen Mahindra Thar as well. As is already evident from the spy shots, the next-gen Scorpio is significantly larger than the model it will replace. It will get all new body panels but the design will still sport the upright silhouette that has defined the SUV since it was first launched in 2002. There is a also pronounced kink on the rear door pushing upwards along with the window line.

Although this test mule was wearing temporary halogen units, we expect to see vertically placed LED DRLs on the face of the SUV like the XUV300. At the rear, the SUV is expected to continue with side hinged doors and vertically placed tail-lamps. The bulge on the bonnet under the camouflage suggest that the SUV will get a hood scoop and the air intakes now look wider on a larger bumper. It also gets a larger tail gate with a shorter loading height for easier ingress and egress.

The new SUV will be much more premium sitting on a updated ladder-frame chassis.

On the inside, the next-gen Scorpio will have a fresh dashboard design which will be dominated by a large touchscreen infotainment system. In fact, the new Scorpio is expected to share a lot of its switchgear with the Marazzo, like the steering wheel, gear knob, control stalks and even the instrument cluster to keep costs in check. Like the XUV300, the next-gen model of the Scorpio could offer bits like dual-zone aircon and an electric sunroof. Also, unlike the current version, which gets side-facing third-row of seats, the next-gen model will have front-facing seats that will help the SUV pass off for a more premium model.

Under the hood, the new Scorpio is expected to continue with its current BS6 2.2L mHawk diesel engine. The power and torque outputs from the engine is also expected to remain identical. The bigger news for the next-gen Scorpio is that it will receive a brand new 2.0L turbo-petrol engine. This is the first time the Scorpio will be powered by a petrol engine in its lifetime and it will be much more powerful than it has ever been. This new G20 petrol engine belongs to Mahindra’s mStallion family of engines that the company introduced at the 2020 Auto Expo. Both the engines will come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Mahindra does not offer an automatic gearbox with the Scorpio. It remains to be seen of the new car gets it or not.
